The sunny sights and sounds of the Iberian Peninsula have long-inspired composers from all over the globe. Amongst the most infamous to seek an exotic Mediterranean milieu was the Italian, Domenico Scarlatti. His prowess at the keyboard and composerly innovation was without parallel during his lifetime. After settling in Spain in the late 1720s, Scarlatti evolved a musical style that was wholly unique: a keen integration of Spanish idioms with the aesthetic hallmarks of the High Baroque. A century and a half later, Enrique Granados emerged as one of Spains greatest nationalist composers. A distinguished pianist in his own right, Granados cultivated a refined compositional style which sprung from the very heart of the Spanish soul. Complementing these two Iberian icons, Adam Sherkin includes his own Three Meditations: intimate music that hints at an Iberian connection with a warmer, wistful ambience, surely inspired by southern climes.
