ONE
Carolee Schneemanns artists book Czanne, She Was a Great Painter was originally printed in three editions in 1974, 1975 and 1976.
The book compiles Schneemanns writings from the 1960s and 70s: letters and unsent letters, fragments from notebooks, manifesto-like statements, and performance scripts including that from her renowned 1975 piece, Interior Scroll. Though best known for her performances, Schneemann has always identified as a painter, and the title comes from her early interest in Czanne. She writes, in the books introduction: "Around twelve years old I knew a few names of 'great artists.' . . . I decided a painter named 'Czanne' would be my mascot; I would assume Czanne was unquestionably a woAman." In the context of the current exhibition Dear Carolee: Carolee Schneemann in Letters, Kunstverein Toronto has re-published Czanne in a new edition of 250.

TWO
Liberated from the delivery system, the review is freed of content.
Reception and aesthetic judgement are not absolute, but reflexive and co-directional; the process engaged between subject and two or more viewers is conversational rather than evaluative. While aesthetic judgement remains part of a larger sphere, the conversation is not relegated to subjective agreements on the value of the art object, but rather engaged in a dialogue alongside the discursive edge of the work in question. Rearviews challenges critical writing practices by assigning critical authority to artists through the gradual elimination of the subject of critique.
