Mitchell Fenton: Moving Pictures

It has been said that it is not the destination, but rather the journey, that is most important.

In Moving Pictures, traditional Canadian landscape painter Mitchell Fenton embarks on a journey through new territories, as he engages with the notion of landscapes as seen through the lens of our handheld devices.

Historically, landscape painting was the main avenue through which the public could experience these remote vistas. Now, through the magic of the Internet, anyone can find an iPhone or Go-Pro video of someone hiking through the expanse of the Rockies.

In Fenton’s most recent exhibition, the presence of the Play Button across a perfectly aligned grand vista or a crop of rocks in a tranquil lake invites the viewer to fill in the missing information; what journey or adventure takes place if we were able to hit play?

The exhibition Moving Pictures tells a story, inviting the viewer to join in on the journey from Ontario to Alberta and back again. Along the way we will explore the landscape, meet some characters, perhaps interact with them… and then it is over.

As part of his Play on Painting series, Fenton opens up a dialogue on how technology affects our experience and, ultimately our journey, with the great outdoors.
