Maple Leaf Forever Tree: Distribution Event at Todmorden Mills

The legacy of the Maple Leaf Forever tree continues to blossom at an event Saturday June 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Todmorden Mills.

On July 19, 2013 a storm brought down an aged silver maple tree on Laing Street in Toronto's Leslieville neighbourhood (Ward 32). This famed maple tree was believed to be the inspiration for the song "Maple Leaf Forever" by Alexander Muir, which he wrote in the year of Confederation 1867. His song, like the image of the maple leaf it evokes, has become a powerful symbol for Canadians and Torontonians.

The City of Toronto continues to preserve the historic legacy of this tree by creating options to craft the salvaged wood into community art and cultural pieces and by distributing portions of its trunk and limbs to cultural and historic organizations across Canada. On June 7, an event distributing the wood of this famed tree will extend the legacy of this tree to Toronto designers, wood workers, artists and musicians as well as planting a sapling of the tree at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site at 67 Pottery Road. This site was one of the first paper mills of its kind in Upper Canada. The public is invited to be part of the many free events of the day on June 7 that will include presentations, exhibitions and more!
