'Luminescence' by Dragonfly Dance Company
"From the darkest depths comes the brightest light" ~ Illuminating the light and soul of the human experience
'Luminescence' refers to a very specific creation of light: beautiful, mesmerizing… it can be dangerous and deadly, it exists in nature and it can be created, it changes with the seasons, it pertains to both the material and the soulful. Our “Luminescence” is an aura of light, in its multidimensional facets: the light of the soul, the life force that radiates a variety of colors attached to emotions and experiences, originating from human nature.
"Luminescence" is Dragonfly Dance Company's debut production. It is a journey of color and music showcasing a range of human emotions, from elated to suffering, from celebration to tragedy and back again through the language of movement derived from the culturally rich Middle Eastern dance genre set to both traditional Middle Eastern music as well as modern western music, in ways that are unique to Dragonfly.
Presenting original choreography by Zahira, (with guest choreographers Ruyah, Lisa Webb and Anuka; input by Dragonfly Dance Company members). Zahira is the Artistic Director of Dragonfly Dance; a professional bellydance artist, she also holds a MA in Art History from the University of Toronto and is a PhD Candidate in Medieval Studies. She has been teaching Middle Eastern Dance since 2006. Dragonfly Dance Company aims to bring the art of bellydance to all audiences in a way that puts forth the vocabulary of bellydance as a movement language in its own right, as an art form with many facets, colors and shades, from the traditional to the avant-garde; with deep respect for the art form and the cultures that saw its birth while at the same time embracing its international resonance, the ripples of creativity and experimental richness it can and has inspired.
With 7 lead dancers and 13 guest & accompanying dancers.
