Luminato: The Lost Songs of Toronto

From “London Bridge is falling down” to “New York, New York” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” the great cities of the world have traditions of story and song that are unmistakably their own. So, in 2012, Toronto’s first poet laureate Dennis Lee, one of the great literary champions of the city, set out to explore and to resurrect the glorious songs of Hogtown. Only there was a problem – there were none to be found.

Undaunted, Lee and five musician friends decided to write the darn things themselves. The result is The Lost Songs of Toronto, a delightful and original array of ballads and love songs, children`s tunes and rock anthems that might have been the city`s for generations. Developed at Soulpepper and staged by the company to sold-out audiences, this playful yet serious cabaret serenades Toronto lovingly, drawing on Lee`s incomparable sense of the GTA’s neighbourhoods and the extraordinary musical talents of fellow Soulpepper Resident Artists Waleed Abdulhamid, John Millard, Patricia O`Callaghan, Mike Ross and Suba Sankaran. Come and enjoy!
