Dirk de Bruyn's films reflect on the wanderlust that has propelled the artist forward. Dutch-born, but Australian based, de Bruyn creates work that elucidate the fractured experience of the perpetual expatriate. In 16mm he developed a beautiful yet manic collage structure of photographic imagery, rotoscoped drawings and chemical processing—notable in his films "Rote Movie" and "Understanding Science," made when de Bruyn was living in British Columbia for an extended period in the Nineties. His filmmaking process has been recently translated into digital through both work that directly transcode the manipulated analogue film to digital video ("Death of Place") or videos that use a DSLR camera like he once used a Super 8mm—pixilating, time-lapsing and montaging diverse imagery into diaristic visual essays. Found Found Found, his most recent video essay, expands his trip through Eastern Europe into a reflection on a visible change in geopolitics, suggesting that, “surveillance, metamorphosed from avant-garde and minimalist cinema, [is] the 'new norm', and witness [ing] the new stasis that hypermobility institutes globally and the florid thinking it elicits."

In addition to this screening, de Bruyn will be visiting LIFT from October 16 to November 8, where he will also teach a workshop on sound shadow-play and image manipulation on November 2.

Dirk de Bruyn has made numerous experimental, documentary and animation films and videos over the last 30 years. He has received funding to produce a number of films, but has continued to maintain a no-budget, independent, self-funded focus for much of his work. He was a founding member and past president of MIMA (Experimenta), been involved with Fringe Network and been a member of the Melbourne Super 8 Film Group. He has written about and curated various programs of film and video art internationally and written extensively about this area of arts practice. During the late '90s he was involved in an independent weekly screening program of film and video art at the Café Bohemio. In the early '90s de Bruyn lived in Canada. Understanding Science, Rote Movie and Doubt were largely produced while teaching Animation at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver.
