Lecture: Apocalypse - World War I

With the French historians Olivier Wieviorka and Nicolas Offenstadt.

From the soldiers in the trenches to the civilians and rulers behind the lines, a look back on one of the most devastating conflicts of all time.

Was the sacrifice of an entire generation worldwide an avoidable or a necessary tragedy? How did such a cruel and far-reaching conflict occur? How did men and women endure the atrocity for four long years? The series Apocalypse, World War I seeks to address such questions using a global and all-encompassing yet personal and sensitive approach.

Drawing from over 500 hours of archival footage, often previously unseen and colourized, the series takes us to the battlefields, inside the minds of those who governed, and to the heart of life behind the frontlines.

We will move from the trenches in the North of France to the least known fronts of Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Palestine and the Arabian deserts where millions of soldiers from the five continents will perish and suffer wounds of the flesh and mind. The narration brings to life the memories and experiences of these men and women, and helps us to better understand and feel how “yesterday’s world” was driven to apocalypse.

The screening of the documentary will be followed by a round table.
