Hundreds of LGBTQ Egyptians have been among the victims of the countrys massive human rights violations since the 2013 coup. Police target vulnerable queers through online entrapment and bathhouse raids, keeping more people imprisoned for their sexuality and gender expression than any other country in the world. This talk examines how these abuses relate to other state crimes and the role of the Obama administration in supporting the Sisi regime.

Nayrouz Abu Hatoum, a York University doctoral candidate in Social Anthropology whose work has appeared in Jadaliyya, Sawt Al Niswa and Al-Akhbar, will introduce the lecture. Scott Long, founding director of Human Rights Watch's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Program, is a human rights fellow at Harvard Law School. He will talk about living in Cairo over the last three years and his work with Egyptian activists in response to the mounting crackdown on sexuality and gender.
