In the cold, comfortable safety of darkest January, we thin-skinned hibernators gather together under dim lights and body heat; united by fear of the oncoming season of rebirth and rejuvenation, of thaw and hunger, of renewing old wars and settling scores no longer embedded in the ice of mean survival. We huddle in hope that the era of fast flowing water is far off still.
