Italian world music group Almoraima brings their fusion of gypsy flamenco and middle eastern music to Canada with their new album Banjara. This is their only Toronto show on their 2014 Canadian tour. They are very excited to have Toronto group Ventanas open the night!

Almoraima is a world music group based in the Salento region of Southern Italy. Since 2007 they have been dedicated to researching the gypsy musical tradition and, in particular, the various musical connections that have been created between Andalucia, the Arab countries and Rajasthan.

It is no coincidence that the group takes its name from the strip of Andalusian land between Jerez de la Fronteira, Cordoba and Sevilla, where Sindhi gypsies from Rajasthan, North African Moors, Jews and even the Spanish themselves all found asylum, coming back from trips to the new world, full of innovative rhythms and sounds.

Banjara is a journey that is full of sounds and nomadic traditions, of energy and spirituality, of rituals, gestures and rhythms which evoke distant worlds. Paths of the East that are tracked through the footprints of a gypsy caravan in the sand, that from the Thar desert, crossing the Mediterranean sea, arrives in Andalucia, blending elements of the two worlds and musical traditions: Eastern Arabic and Andalusian gypsy flamenco.
