Wenders in Japan – “Notebook on Cities and Clothes” („Aufzeichnungen zu Kleidern und Städten", Germany/France, 1988/9, 81 min.), documentary by Wim Wenders with Yohji Yamamoto.

Over the course of a year, Wim Wenders followed Tokyo-based fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto, who in the early 1980s shocked and revolutionized the fashion world. “Notebook on Cities and Clothes” is not a typical documentary, but rather akin to sketchbook etchings, an intimate project which feels like a diary entry within Wenders body of work. Situating himself within the film through voiceovers and conversations with Yamamoto, Wenders investigates the similarities of filmmaking and fashion, yet the film essentially highlights a meeting of two brilliant artists.

“He films against an ubiquitous disappearance and pays his respect by taking his time. This is the tenderness he can muster up towards reality.” – Die Zeit

“The art of Wenders film language is created in moments in which nothing is spoken but we experience our thoughts.” – DOK.fest Munich
