Statement of Solidarity with the Syrian Revolution
As Syrians mark the first anniversary of the Assad regimes chemical attacks on Al Ghouta, which caused the death of several hundred people, we the undersigned stand in solidarity with the millions of Syrians who have struggled for dignity and freedom since March 2011. We call on the people of the world to act in support of the revolution and its goals, demanding the immediate end of the violence and the end of the illegitimate Assad regime.
On the anniversary of the attack, August 21st, we call on supporters of the Syrian Revolution, and of the region wide and global uprisings for freedom, dignity and social justice, to organize events to denounce the atrocities, misinformation, lies and shamed silences, and to show solidarity, both political and material, with the ongoing efforts of grassroots Syrians.
Syrian revolutionaries have continued to struggle for freedom despite the many obstacles they face. To kill the revolution, the Syrian regime pursued four strategies: 1 militarization of the revolt through a six-month long campaign of violent repression of peaceful protests 2 islamization of the uprising by targeting secular groups and empowering Jihadists, 3 sectarianization of the conflict through recruitment of an increasing number of Shia fighters from abroad, coupled with the targeting of Sunni areas, and 4 internationalization of the war by inviting Iran and Russia to play a central role. At the same time countries such as the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar backed reactionary groups to undermine the popular revolution.
The case of the Douma 4 also shows that Syrian revolutionaries are fighting on two fronts. Four brave activists working for the Violations Documentation Centre were kidnapped in December 2013 by unknown masked armed men believed to be from Islamist groups. These activists were targeted because they consistently spoke out against all forms of tyranny and human rights abuses regardless of the perpetrator. Their kidnapping is a reminder that the Syrian revolution is not only against the Assad dictatorship, but also increasingly against reactionary and opportunist groups that oppose the objectives of the revolution: democracy, social justice and an end to sectarianism.
The first anniversary of the chemical attacks is an occasion to reaffirm the importance of the revolutionary process not only in Syria but also in the entire Arab World. The Syrian struggle against dictatorship, global jihadism, and imperialism from whichever quarter it comes, should not be viewed as local or even regional. It forms part of an insurrectionary moment in which the whole world has become the battlefield. The new developments in Iraq and the resumed war on Gaza have shown that the fate of the Syrian revolution is connected to the situation in the entire region. The struggle of Syrians for dignity, freedom, and self-determination cannot be delinked from the historic rebellion against Zionism, the Egyptian struggles against military despotism, the Bahraini uprising against dictatorship, the Kurdish struggle for self-determination, the Zapatista and other indigenous populations resistance against racism and neoliberalism, or the massive workers rebellions on every continent against crisis-driven austerity demands.
The Syrian revolution is at a crossroads, and Syrian revolutionaries are in desperate need of support as they fight on several fronts. A victory for the various counter-revolutions would make permanent the largest ethnic cleansing of our century, leave the country in ruins, and critically destabilise the region and the world. A victory for the revolution, however, would unleash long-repressed social and political aspirations throughout the Arab world and beyond.

Declaracin de solidaridad con la revolucin siria
Mientras los sirios conmemoran el primer aniversario de los ataques qumicos en Guta, que causaron la muerte a varios cientos de personas, nosotros, los abajo firmantes, expresamos nuestra solidaridad con los millones de sirios que han estado luchando por la dignidad y la libertad desde marzo del 2011. Le pedimos a la gente del mundo que acte en apoyo a la revolucin y sus objetivos, exigiendo el fin inmediato de la violencia y del rgimen ilegtimo de Assad.
En el aniversario del ataque, el 21 de agosto, hacemos un llamamiento a los partidarios de la Revolucin Siria y de los levantamientos a escala regional y mundial por la libertad, la dignidad y la justicia social, a organizar eventos para denunciar las atrocidades, la desinformacin, las mentiras y los vergonzosos silencios, y a mostrar su solidaridad, tanto poltica como material, con los continuos esfuerzos de los ciudadanos sirios de las bases.
Los revolucionarios sirios han seguido luchando por la libertad a pesar de los muchos obstculos que enfrentan. Para aplastar la revolucin, el rgimen sirio ha llevado a cabo cuatro estrategias: 1 militarizacin de las revueltas mediante una campaa de seis meses de represin violenta de las protestas pacficas, 2 islamizacin del levantamiento al atacar a grupos seculares y empoderar a yihadistas, 3 sectarizacin del conflicto mediante el reclutamiento de un creciente nmero de combatientes chiitas de Irn, Irak, Lbano, Yemen y Afganistn, junto con el ataque a ciudades y pueblos sunnitas, y 4 internacionalizacin de la guerra al invitar a Irn y Rusia a jugar un papel central en el conflicto. Al mismo tiempo, pases como los Estados Unidos, Arabia Saudita y Qatar respaldaron a grupos reaccionarios para socavar la revolucin popular.
El caso de la "Douma 4" tambin demuestra que los revolucionarios sirios estn luchando en dos frentes. Cuatro valientes activistas que trabajan para el Centro de Documentacin de Violaciones fueron secuestrados en diciembre del 2013 por hombres desconocidos, armados y enmascarados, de los cuales se cree son parte de grupos islamistas. Estos activistas fueron atacados debido a que se han pronunciado de manera consecuente en contra de todas las formas de tirana y de las violaciones a los derechos humanos, independientemente de quin fuera el responsable. Su secuestro es un recordatorio de que la revolucin siria no se dirige nicamente contra la dictadura de Assad, sino tambin cada vez ms contra grupos reaccionarios y oportunistas que se oponen a los objetivos de la revolucin: la democracia, la justicia social y el fin del sectarismo religioso.
El primer aniversario de los ataques qumicos es una ocasin para reafirmar la importancia del proceso revolucionario, no solo en Siria, sino tambin en todo el mundo rabe. La lucha contra la dictadura siria, el yihadismo global y el imperialismo, de donde quiera que este venga, no debe ser vista tan solo como local, ni siquiera como regional. Forma parte de un momento insurreccional en el que el mundo entero se ha convertido en el campo de batalla. Los nuevos desarrollos en Irak y la reanudada guerra contra Gaza han demostrado que el destino de la revolucin siria est conectado a la situacin en toda la regin. La lucha de los sirios por la dignidad, la libertad y la autodeterminacin no puede desvincularse de la histrica rebelin contra el sionismo, de las luchas en Egipto contra el despotismo militar, del levantamiento de Barin contra la dictadura, de la lucha kurda por la autodeterminacin, de la resistencia zapatista y de otras poblaciones indgenas contra el racismo y el neoliberalismo, o de las masivas rebeliones de trabajadores en todos los continentes contra las medidas de austeridad impulsadas por la crisis.
La revolucin siria est en una encrucijada, y los revolucionarios sirios estn en una urgente necesidad de apoyo mientras luchan en varios frentes. Una victoria de las diversas contrarrevoluciones convertira en permanente la mayor limpieza tnica de nuestro siglo, dejara el pas en ruinas, y desestabilizara gravemente la regin y el mundo. Una victoria de la revolucin, sin embargo, desencadenara las aspiraciones sociales y polticas por largo tiempo reprimidas en todo el mundo rabe y ms all de sus fronteras.

Dclaration de solidarit avec la rvolution syrienne
Alors que les syrien.ne.s commmorent le premier anniversaire des attaques chimiques du rgime Al-Assad sur Al Ghouta, qui a caus la mort de plusieurs centaines de personnes, nous les soussign.e.s, manifestons notre solidarit avec les millions de syrien.ne.s qui luttent pour la dignit et la libert depuis mars 2011. Nous appelons les peuples du monde agir en faveur de la rvolution et de ses objectifs, exigeant la fin immdiate de la violence et la fin du rgime illgitime dAl-Assad.
la date du premier anniversaire des attaques, le 21 aot, nous appelons les partisan.ne.s de la rvolution syrienne, et des soulvements rgionaux et mondiaux pour la libert, la dignit et la justice sociale, organiser des manifestations pour dnoncer les atrocits, la dsinformation, les mensonges et silences couverts de honte, et faire preuve de solidarit, la fois politique et matrielle, avec les efforts en cours des mouvements de base en Syrie.
Les rvolutionnaires syrien.ne.s ont continu lutter pour la libert, malgr les nombreux obstacles auxquels ils/elles sont confront.e.s. Pour tuer la rvolution, le rgime syrien a poursuivi quatre stratgies: 1 la militarisation des rvoltes par une longue campagne de six mois de rpression violente des protestations pacifiques 2 lislamisation de linsurrection en ciblant les groupes laques et en renforant les djihadistes, 3 le dtournement du conflit vers une logique sectaire par le recrutement dun nombre croissant de combattants chiites de ltranger, coupl avec le ciblage des zones sunnites, et 4 linternationalisation de la guerre en invitant lIran et la Russie jouer un rle central. Au mme temps, des pays comme les tats-Unis, lArabie Saoudite et le Qatar ont soutenu des groupes ractionnaires pour miner la rvolution populaire.
Le cas des Douma4 , campagne pou demander la libration de lactiviste rvolutionnaire Razan Zeitouneh et 3 autres de ses camarades, montre galement que les rvolutionnaires syrien.ne.s se battent sur deux fronts. Quatre activistes courageux/ses, travaillant pour le Centre de documentation des violations, ont t enlev.e.s en dcembre 2013 par des inconnus, masqus et arms, censs appartenir des groupes islamistes. Ces activistes ont t cibl.e.s parce quils/elles ont dnonc rgulirement tout forme de tyrannie et les violations des droits de lhomme, indpendamment de lauteur. Leur prise en otage est un rappel que la rvolution syrienne nest pas seulement contre la dictature dAl-Assad, mais aussi de plus en plus contre les groupes ractionnaires et opportunistes qui sopposent aux objectifs de la rvolution : la dmocratie, la justice sociale et la fin du sectarisme.
Le premier anniversaire des attentats chimiques est loccasion de raffirmer limportance du processus rvolutionnaire, non seulement en Syrie mais aussi dans lensemble du monde arabe. La lutte des syrien.ne.s contre la dictature, le djihadisme global et limprialisme do quil vienne, ne devrait pas tre considre comme quelque chose de local ou mme de rgional. Elle fait partie dun moment insurrectionnel o le monde est devenu le champ de bataille. Les nouveaux dveloppements en Irak, et la reprise de la guerre contre Gaza, ont montr que le sort de la rvolution syrienne est relie la situation dans toute la rgion. La lutte des syrien.ne.s pour la dignit, la libert et lautodtermination ne peut tre dissocie de la rsistance historique contre le sionisme, les luttes gyptiennes contre le despotisme militaire, le soulvement bahreni contre la dictature, la lutte des kurdes pour lautodtermination, celle des zapatistes et dautres populations autochtones contre le racisme et le nolibralisme, ou les massifs soulvements ouvriers sur tous les continents contre les exigences daustrit entranes par la crise.
La rvolution en Syrie est un carrefour, et les rvolutionnaires syrien.ne.s sont dans le besoin dsespr de soutien dans leur lutte sur plusieurs fronts. Une victoire pour les diffrentes contre-rvolutions rendrait permanent le plus grand nettoyage ethnique de notre sicle, laisserait le pays en ruines, et dstabiliserait gravement la rgion et le monde. Cependant, une rvolution russie en Syrie dclencherait les aspirations rvolutionnaires longtemps rprimes dans le monde arabe et au-del.

Verklaring van solidariteit met de Syrische revolutie
Terwijl Syrirs de eerste verjaardag beleven van de chemische aanvallen van het Assad-regime op Al Ghouta, die de dood van honderden mensen veroorzaakte, zijn ondergetekenden solidair met de miljoenen Syrirs die sinds maart 2011 strijden voor waardigheid en vrijheid. We roepen de volkeren van de wereld op om de revolutie en haar doelen te ondersteunen, eisen de onmiddellijke stopzetting van het geweld en het einde van de onwettige regime van Assad.
Op de verjaardag van de aanval, 21 augustus, roepen wij aanhangers van de Syrische Revolutie op, en van de regionale en wereldwijde opstanden voor vrijheid, waardigheid en sociale rechtvaardigheid, om evenementen te organiseren om de wreedheden, desinformatie, leugens en beschaamde stiltes aan de kaak te stellen, en om solidariteit te tonen, politiek en materieel, met de voortdurende inspanningen van gewone Syrirs.
Syrische revolutionairen zijn blijven strijden voor vrijheid, ondanks de vele obstakels waarmee zij worden geconfronteerd. Om de revolutie te vermoorden heeft, het Syrische regime vier strategien gevolgd:
1. militarisering van de opstand door een zes maanden durende gewelddadige onderdrukkingscampagne van vreedzame protesten,
2. islamisering van de opstand door zich tegen seculiere groepen te richten en jihadisten te ondersteunen,
3. sectarisering van het conflict door werving van een groeiend aantal sjiitische strijders uit het buitenland, in combinatie met het als doelwit kiezen van de soennitische gebieden, en
4. internationalisering van de oorlog door het uitnodigen van Iran en Rusland om een centrale rol te spelen. Tegelijkertijd steunden landen als de Verenigde Staten, Saoedi-Arabi en Qatar reactionaire groepen om de volksrevolutie ondermijnen.
Het geval van de "Douma 4" toont ook aan dat de Syrische revolutionairen vechten op twee fronten. Vier dappere activisten die werkten voor het Violations Documentation Centre werden in december 2013 ontvoerd door onbekende gemaskerde gewapende mannen van wie gedacht wordt dat ze van islamitische groeperingen zijn. Deze activisten waren het doelwit omdat ze zich consequent uitspraken tegen elke vorm van tirannie mensenrechtenschendingen , ongeacht de dader. Hun ontvoering is een reminder dat de Syrische revolutie is niet alleen tegen de Assad-dictatuur is, maar ook steeds meer tegen reactionaire en opportunistische groepen die tegen de doelstellingen van de revolutie zijn: democratie, sociale rechtvaardigheid en een einde aan sektarisme.
De eerste verjaardag van de chemische aanvallen is een gelegenheid om het belang van het revolutionaire proces te bevestigen, niet alleen in Syri maar in de gehele Arabische wereld. De Syrische strijd tegen dictatuur, wereldwijd jihadisme en imperialisme van welke kant ook, moet niet worden gezien als lokaal of zelfs regionaal.
Het maakt deel uit van een moment van opstand waarin de hele wereld is uitgegroeid tot het slagveld. De nieuwe ontwikkelingen in Irak en de hervatting van de oorlog in Gaza laten zien dat het lot van de Syrische revolutie is verbonden met de situatie in de hele regio. De strijd van de Syrirs voor waardigheid, vrijheid en zelfbeschikking kan niet worden losgekoppeld van de historische opstand tegen het zionisme, de Egyptische strijd tegen de militaire dictatuur, de Bahreinse opstand tegen dictatuur, de Koerdische strijd voor zelfbeschikking, het 'verzet van de Zapatista en andere inheemse bevolkingsgroepen tegen racisme en neoliberalisme, of de massale arbeidersopstanden op ieder continent tegen crisisgestuurde bezuinigingen.
De Syrische revolutie staat op een kruispunt, en Syrische revolutionairen hebben wanhopige behoefte aan steun omdat ze vechten op verschillende fronten. Een overwinning voor de diverse contrarevoluties zou de grootste etnische zuivering van onze eeuw permanent maken, laat het land in puin achter, en destabiliseert de regio en de wereld kritiek. Een overwinning voor de revolutie echter, zou lang onderdrukte sociale en politieke aspiraties ontketenen in de hele Arabische wereld en daarbuiten.
