“(It) couldn’t be anything other than beautifully arranged trash” – PopMatters, on D/P/I’s Espresso Digital

“Hyper-lucid yet intangible electronic deviations” – Boomkat

When do beats become beats? D/P/I takes primordial, textured noise, whirls it together to create unstable but fascinating rhythms. It’s not quite danceable but has a spellbinding, esoteric momentum. Embracing random collisions, no two D/P/I releases sound alike but a sharp curatorial mindset is evidenced by sequencing what is essentially free improvisation into mixtape-friendly flows. Plus, he can DJ.

D/P/I’s first Toronto appearance is the centerpiece of a summit – dance party on night one, concert on night two – curated by Healing Power Records (HPR) , a Toronto-based record label initiated by Victoria Cheong and Wolfgang Nessel.

HPR curates shows and releases records with the aim of maintaining a supportive environment for local artists and cultivating an open-mindedness towards new music in the city drawing from free jazz, improv, noise, techno, dance and pop.

Also on board are Craig Dunsmuir and Fleshtone Aura. Dunsmuir is best known as half of groove experimentalists Glissandro 70 with Sandro Perri. Craig currently DJs disco 12″s hither and yon, and is a longstanding clerk/buyer at one of Toronto’s leading record stores, Soundscapes.

Andrew Zukerman is Fleshtone Aura. Zukerman has worked with both the spectacularly noisy Gastric Female Reflex and Beniffer Editions and has released tape-and-electronics manipulations on the Pleasance and Psychic Encumbrance labels.

As for the HPR mainstays, Cheong will be creating “Purple Sunset Room” multimedia installations for the Music Gallery performance, while Nessel assumes his DJ HVYWTR alter ego in the DJ portion of the summit. He’ll be joined by Dunsmuir, Zukerman and D/P/I himself to kick out some more danceable but still twisted jams.
