Cities are not like suburbs, only denser. They differ from towns and suburbs in basic ways, and one of these is that cities are, by definition, full of strangers. - Jane Jacobs

For those invested in the arts community, its paramount to meet; we drink, we ask each other for cigarettes, we forget to look at the art at an opening and text our friends the next day asking what it was about. Knowing that we are a community is imperative to our success within it and our pursuit of expansion, whether working our way up the ranks or into other communities. We need one another to create our identities whether real or constructed and so we are constantly, arterially pulsing, clicking like in large, white rooms. As individual players in the current virtual landscape, we need not have been introduced face-to-face to know of one another, but remain strangers just the same.

In Cool Springs, opening April 17th at Working Title, we examine these connections by bringing together a group of artists whose names have come up again and again in the networks of one of the citys pre-eminent photographers, Aaron Wynia. In arguably the most utopian of contemporary spaces, a store, we will have a Spring meeting, and observe the works of these Toronto-based artists, whose connections are both close and disparate, unknown and established. If we bring together just one artists conception of network, can we expand upon a community? Or, more succinctly: can strangers finally meet?
