Concert: Gerineldo

Artists: Oro Anahory-Librowicz, Judith Cohen, Tamar Ilana, Solly Lévy, Demetrios Petsalakis

A rare opportunity, after a twenty-year hiatus! The ensemble GERINELDO carries you away to Morocco for a journey into Judeo-Spanish culture from the north of the country, the former Spanish Protectorate towns of Tangier, Tetouan, Larache and Alcazarquivir. During an outstanding evening, you will hear Sephardic ballads of long-ago kings and queens, wedding songs to make you want to get up and dance, and haunting sung poetry in Hebrew and Ladino. As a special treat, learn about Moroccan Jewish henna designs and sumptuous wedding robes with our special guests.

The Gerineldo ensemble was founded in Montréal in 1980, to preserve and disseminate the Judeo-Spanish music traditions of Northern Morocco.

They perform authentic Moroccan Judeo-Spanish (haketía) songs - some a capella, others with ‘oud, darbuka, bendir, riqq, flutes and medieval bowed vielle.

Gerineldo has performed from Venezuela to Israël, from Spain to Canada and the United States. Their twenty-year reunion concert took place in Paris, France, in March 2014, as part of the Journées de judaïsme marocain, under the high patronage of His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, and they have been invited to return to Paris in June 2015.
