Caroline Marshall solo show at Muse Gallery: Ice and Earth
Paintings: Caroline Marshall, Ice and Earth, Oct 20 - Nov 10, 2016. Reception Sat Oct 22, 1-3 pm.
"There is a rawness and simplicity to the earth I am exploring in my recent abstracts. Large chunky forms, areas of intensity, and slabs of nothingness are sometimes marred by lines or odd floating shapes. I paint with pallet knives and oil paints usually mixed with cold wax giving the surface a matt and sculptural look. In response to living on an island for 10 years, this work focuses on the changes I experience living in an unpopulated area and the changes that I imagine are evolving beyond my island. My abstracts are aerial views giving them a distant, unreal feel. Hopefully the viewer will find something familiar in these large abstracts and will try to imagine, as I have, the characteristics of our country. While I am mostly influenced by the New York School, my paintings have a mind of their own, seem to just happen and I am often guided by mistakes. My palette is predetermined. The process challenges me and throws me into periods of joy, angst and peace."
