Two of Canadas most original violists, longtime friends and musical collaborators Carol Gimbel and Pemi Paull join forces to present an eclectic recital featuring music for one and two violas. Fresh from their recent joint appearance at the 2014 International Viola Congress at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, the duo continue to make waves with their creative and unusual concert programs. Passionate in their commitment to the creation and dissemination of new works for viola, they also actively explore what it means to be a classical musician today, reinventing the three hundred year old tradition of chamber music for 21st century ears in their respective capacities as creators and artistic directors of their own chamber music ensembles Gimbels Toronto-based Music in the Barns, and Paulls Montreal-based Warhol Dervish.

For this, their Toronto Summer Music Festival program, Paull and Gimbel will present world premieres of two substantial new works for solo viola, by Toronto-based composers Rose Bolton and David Jaeger, respectively the latters work scored for viola and electronics, as well as works for viola by Georges Enescu and Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire fame. The two will also join forces to perform a selection of violin duos by Luciano Berio, in their own arrangement for two violas.
