Blue Note Kathryn Macnaughton Solo Exhibition HUNTCLUB

HUNTCLUB resident artist Kathryn Macnaughton reveals a series of large canvases created during a winter-long practice and meditation.

With her third show in three years, Macnaughtons continued devotion to her painting practice has resulted in a visible maturity in style and process The evolution of her studies has cultivated a new approach. Challenged by the meticulous minutia of painting, she searched for clarity. Cleaner, less chaotic abstracts indicate she has found some of it.

In her earlier works, the artist was often driven by an elusive law of chance; abstract shapes would form by serendipitous application of paint to canvas. Macnaughton now paints with great intent and precise methodology. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Matisse and Rauschenberg, the new canvases are larger, lending to more breathing room as she investigates the laws of composition. These paintings are a testament to a new working method and carefully directed aesthetic. As Macnaughton continues to investigate a more cohesive palette and new ideas of composition, we see a confidence in her ability to suggest motion and depth through colour.

Kathryn Macnaughton is a Toronto based artist with a Bachelor of Design from OCAD. She works as a freelance illustrator and is a resident of HUNTCLUB Studio where she avidly paints and pursues her career as a fine artist.

Blue Note opens at HUNTCLUB on February 26, 2015 with a reception from 7-11pm.
