BAG HEADS is an ongoing process-driven art project involving public performance /intervention and mixed media works on paper. Bag Head masks are created in groups and then used as reference material for the drawings where graphite portraits are rendered then collage is added on top. Concealing the graphite renderings is an act to subvert the identity of the subjects as well as to subvert the value of the representational drawing itself. The use of masks is an essential human act, rooted in the same vein of painting or mark-making. The everyday object of the paper bag becomes a ready-made mask, offering transcendence from customary societal roles; it is either a freedom or restriction from showing your true self.

The intent of play or malice is camouflaged in scenes of the masked figures in abstracted wastelands. By navigating these pure, yet contaminated misty passages, one embarks in a search for what makes us savage, wild, or ‘other’. It is an investigation into how people present themselves vs. who they really are: it is a pursuit for finding what makes us human and what makes us un-human in a contemporary time.
