Australia's Perch Creek launch new single "Mama Sings"

Direct from Australia, multi-instrumental, harmony driven roots band hit the road for a Canadian summer tour and launch their new single “Mama Sings” at The Horseshoe Tavern.

Melbourne, Australia, multi-instrumental, harmony driven roots group Perch Creek – an energetic band of five, four of whom are siblings – return to Canada for the second time around to celebrate the release of their new single “Mama Sings”. They make their way across Canada and finish up with a headlining show at The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen St. West) in Toronto on Monday, July 27, 2015 – doors 8:30 p.m., the opener is Ontario rockabilly-country band ‘Whoa Nellie!’ at 9:30 p.m., Perch Creek set is at 10:30 p.m. and tickets are $13.00 at the door only.

Perch Creek plays original music with creative energy and fearless spirit that sparkles with imagination and individuality. With diverse instrumentation including guitar, double bass, keyboard, trombone, banjo, saw and tap dancing, they combine five-part vocal harmonies with folk, roots and rock styles woven together by the band’s unique collaborative song writing.

THE NEW SONG, “Mama Sings”:

https://soundcloud.com/perchcreek/mama-sings – official release: June 26, 2015 on MGM Distribution, and now available via their website and iTunes.

THE BAND:

Christi Hodgkins – harmonica, trombone, saw, vocals.

Lear Hodgkins – drums, washboard, vocals.

Eileen Hodgkins – guitar, banjo-uke, tap dancing, vocals.

Camilla Hodgkins – keys, banjo, vocals.

James Chandler – double bass, electric bass, vocals.

The first half of 2015 saw Perch Creek take some time from their busy touring schedule to focus on writing; the fruit of which can now be savoured as the first sweet taste of their upcoming third album, the brand new single “Mama Sings” (video coming soon). It is their first official release under the group’s recently shortened name (formerly The Perch Creek Family Jugband) and it showcases a revitalized sound to accompany the refreshed name.

With a ghostly, haunting chorus reminiscent of an old R'n'B sample, the track features lush electric guitar, modern production and a heavy back beat, juxtaposed against a gritty, rural lyric exploring the universal theme of struggle. In this context, the unusual addition of the musical saw floats through this track like the ghost of someone you didn't know you missed.

Produced by Greg J Walker (Machine Translations, Paul Kelly, CW Stoneking) and recorded at his converted bakery studio in Jumbunna, Victoria “Mama Sings” captures the open flavour of the Australian landscape and the restless South Gippsland wind.
