I AM A MONSTER

August 1- 29, 2014

I AM A MONSTER is an exploration of misunderstood monsters, and addresses the ways in which we feel different and other through looking at our relationships with people, spaces, and ourselves. Monsters throughout literature and film have generally acted as a stand in for a feared Other. Through the use of photographs, the audience discovers who this monster really is, rather than just what. They are given a glimpse of his insecurities, his fears, his hopes, and his accomplishments. The true complexity of his nature is shared with the viewer, who is given permission to empathize with him, and to accept themselves and others as being a little monstrous.

I AM A MONSTER highlights our similarities by exposing them as our assumption of difference. It is an invitation to celebrate the complexities of our humanity.

Uncommon Commons

Curated by Amber Landgraff

Artists: Mary Tremonte, Parastoo Anoushahpour and Jp King

August 1- 23, 2014

Uncommon Commons invites artists Mary Tremonte, Parastoo Anoushahpour and Jp King to examine structures for collaboration and processes of collective making. Tremonte’s project looks at collective silkscreen printing, pasting and distribution as a way of discussing immigration and migration, place and transition. Anoushahpour’s video takes forty hours of raw footage — produced collaboratively using the participatory performance techniques of Augusto Boal — and edits them structurally to maintain the experimental, collaborative and open-ended nature of the project. Finally Jp King, under the guise of The Nomadic Residency Council, extends an open invitation to participate in self-directed and semi-structured artist-in-residences to gallery-goers over the run of the exhibition. Uncommon Commons explores the potentiality and possibility in working together, building common spaces for shared exploration and creation to occur, and interrogates the boundaries of collaborative practices.

1997

Byron Chan

July 9- August 15, 2014

1997 is a single channel looped video that raises questions about ongoing political issues in Hong Kong. After the first Opium War ended in 1842, the British Empire claimed Hong Kong. China eventually resumed control of the land in the year 1997. Most citizens believed that if China resumed control of their land, media and government operations would begin to lose transparency. 1997 depicts the multi-cultural erasure experienced by the people throughout that time period. As the years go by, and as China continues to govern the region, the cultural diversity that has come to exemplify Hong Kong has been slowly degrading. rewrite, and block out memories to create a more idealized account.
