All Tied Up: a History of Corsets and How to Make your Own

This workshop will offer a historical and hands on component, aimed to giving the participants a working knowledge of the history of body modification through structured garments, and the elements of their construction. Through short daily lectures, students will have the opportunity to look back through time at garments of the past, linking trends of dress to key societal factors and contemporary health practices and beliefs. The remainder of class (with breaks for lunch and sanity scheduled as needed) will be focused on garment construction, allowing the students the opportunity to craft their own simple under-bust, hip length corset: a popular style of today. Students are encouraged to embellish their corsets to their liking, but are advised that any time consuming tasks will risk running out of time in class, and as such may be required to do some of this work at home after class time. Students will be provided with a materials list, to be purchased and brought with on the second class. This course is best suited to the intermediate seamstress, who has experience with domestic and/or industrial machines; part of the first class will be focused on acclimatizing students to the speed and power of the industrial machines and other tools they will encounter over the week long course.

Please note: This class is NOT suitable for beginner sewers.

Participants will obtain a FASI Certificate of Completion upon completion of this module.
