SUMMARY: Rally for Climate Justice
LOCATION:Convocation Hall/Queen's Park
URL:http://www.blogto.com/events/69645
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:On Friday, February 1, join University of Toronto Environmental Action and =
other groups as we march from Convocation Hall to Queen's Park (south) to p=
rotest government inaction. We'll listen to guest speakers including City C=
ouncillor Gord Perks, Greenpeace Canada campaigner Keith Stewart, and stude=
nt/First Nations representative Sarah Nanibush, and deliver an open letter =
to federal, provincial, and territorial leaders.

At the recent COP18 conference, Canada was ranked 58th out of 61 countries =
for its action on climate change--the worst in the developed world. The cur=
rent national goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a point 17% bel=
ow 2005 levels. It is not ideal; however, meeting this target would go far =
in protecting Canadian citizens.

Current analysis by Environment Canada and the National Round Table on Envi=
ronment and Economy shows that by 2020 all current and planned action by th=
e federal, provincial and territorial governments will only achieve half of=
Canada's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to a point 17% below th=
e 2005 level.

This failure will lead to catastrophic future costs to be borne by us--stud=
ents, youth, First Nations, and disadvantaged populations everywhere--even =
though we have very little power over Canada=E2=80=99s emissions.

This is unfair and unjust. This is intergenerational injustice.

For that reason, the University of Toronto Environmental Action (UTEA) grou=
p respectfully asks Prime Minister Harper and all the provincial and territ=
orial Premiers to tell us today what action they will take now to be sure w=
e reach the Canadian goal.
