DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Main Gallery ; works by Kirsty Wilson : Spore Fictions of Biology
Biology influences me enormously on a variety of levels, from molecular=20
to ecological. I like to challenge traditional perceptions by illuminating =
the unexpected beauty that is often overlooked in unassuming and often repu=
gnant aspects of nature. While we may feel=20
repulsed at the idea of bacteria, infection, viruses and disease, they=20
can become sublime when seen from a new perspective. The organic world=20
takes us beyond our own bounds, it is more than us and it does not=20
depend on us.

My work draws the viewer in with stark contrast: simultaneously beautiful a=
nd grotesque, delicate and rough, exploring growth and decay all at once. C=
urrently I am working with large-scale painting and ceramic installations t=
hat investigate unique ways to capture the beauty=20
and the essence of the overlooked biological world.

Sacred Worship: Growth, Decay and Resurrection A Calendar FolioThis is a st=
ory about beauty, inspiration and growth. An interpretative,=20
unraveling tale about a life and body as personified in trees. The internal=
dialogue lies behind image and art as this calendar folio is a=20
metamorphous of life=E2=80=99s endurance and constant change. In each of th=
ese trees, a state of being, growing and decaying permeates, all the while=
=20
celebrating a resurrection. Here, there is a connection and reverence for t=
he natural landscape. There is a voice in nature that connects our unconsci=
ous mind to the folds, roots and layers of growth. For each piece in this fo=
lio, I have been inspired by trees associated=20
with each calendar month as well as the myths and gods which accompany them=
. I have also drawn elements of my own skin depicting these themed=20
cycles of life in order to portray a unique and personal representation in =
the waning of a year.
The Oxford dictionary defines =E2=80=9CMythology=E2=80=9D as a collection o=
f myths, especially one belonging to a particular religious or cultural tra=
dition. The natural association with trees and myth is their magical presen=
ce. Trees fascinate us because they have lived to see the change of life on=
earth, spanning not only centuries, but also the rise and=20
fall of civilizations. Trees in this context represent the unknown while=20
their appearance imposes a sense of wonderment and beauty. In this=20
folio, I have captured elements of Nature=E2=80=99s beauty by representing =
her=20
constant change as I have depicted an imagination which represents the=20
voice of beauty.
Sacred Worship, Growth, Decay & Resurrection represents not only the=20
mourning of my mother=E2=80=99s death in 2011, but also a celebration of li=
fe in=20
the cycles of living.
The skins of trees breathe in the breeze of time=E2=80=99s constituents=20
qualities balancing the nurture of nature a vice to advise, and=20
synthesize our way of seeing the world. These branches and our life=20
blood and the way each tree is unique to you and me are how more=20
explicitly they make us feel - {a.currie
