otate This, Soundscapes=0A=0AThe three lifelong friends=E2=80=94brothers St=
even and Andrew McKellar and Richard Wouters=E2=80=94who make up the Wind-u=
p Records recording group Civil Twilight have been playing music together s=
ince they were teenagers growing up in South Africa, emulating the rock mus=
ic they heard coming out of Europe and America, from Oasis, U2 and Nirvana =
to The Verve, The Police, Muse and Radiohead.=0A=0AWhich is why you don=E2=
=80=99t necessarily hear a whole lot of the music of Africa on the band=E2=
=80=99s self-titled debut, but you can hear the continent itself in Steve M=
cKellar=E2=80=99s ambitious lyrics, their existential questioning and spiri=
tual longing the perfect correlative to the music=E2=80=99s expansive atmos=
pheric soundscapes, at once lush, feverish and exotic like a jungle, with t=
he vast, arid spaciousness of a desert. =0A=0ACivil Twilight envelopes you =
in its multi-layered sound and vision. The band=E2=80=99s name itself a ref=
lection on that in-between time, not quite daylight, not quite darkness, bu=
t rather a shifting shade of gray.=0A=0AVocalist/ lyricist/bassist Steven M=
cKellar, who has been living in the U.S. with his bandmates for the past th=
ree years, most recently in Nashville, says =E2=80=9CComing to America was=
more of a culture shock for us than we thought it would be,=E2=80=9D nods =
Wouters. =E2=80=9CBut it was amazing to be in this place where all the musi=
c we loved came from, and all the history attached to it. We always wondere=
d what it would be like to record our own albums here, with the best produc=
ers and studios in the world. It=E2=80=99s all a bit surreal.=E2=80=9D=0A=
=0AFrom Cape Town, South Africa to Nashville, Tennessee, Civil Twilight=E2=
=80=99s trip has already taken them a long way=E2=80=A6 and it=E2=80=99s on=
ly the beginning.=0A
