 Whether or not his progressively more maximilist take on electro-house is =
your bag or not, you have to respect his exponentially steep rise through t=
he electro-house ranks. And Lord knows, you=E2=80=99ve heard it -- or about=
 it: flipping Beethoven=E2=80=99s 5th for the 4 am crowd; eight #1 tracks o=
n Beatport; remix/collabs with Britney Spears, Timbaland and Black Eyed Pea=
s; festival-highlight performances at Coachella =E2=80=9810 and Electric Da=
isy Carnival=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9810 and =E2=80=9811.=0A=0AWhere Joey Youngma=
n, the one-time party kid from San Luis Obispo, CA and another-time househe=
ad old soul, has been electro-house=E2=80=99s dark (work) horse, Weekend in=
 America, his debut full-length for Ultra Music, is Wolfgang Gartner becomi=
ng dance music=E2=80=99s one-man parallel universe, outpacing electro-house=
 and outdoing himself.=0A=0A=E2=80=9COne of my mantras is that I have a res=
ponsibility to advance the genre. If I=E2=80=99m capable of doing something=
 I=E2=80=99ve never done before, I feel like I have to use that ability, be=
cause there are not many people who do - or can. I have to push myself real=
 real hard to do it. That=E2=80=99s something that=E2=80=99s really surface=
d with this record,=E2=80=9D he admits. Gartner=E2=80=99s work ethic is myt=
hical amongst even his most storied contemporaries: Make music all week. Pl=
ay it out all weekend. His DJ sets - and this speaks to a combination of pr=
olificness, personal taste and a proven track record - are almost entirely =
made up of edits of his own work. Then again, when you spend 20 hours a day=
 working on music...=0A=0A=E2=80=9CMaybe it=E2=80=99s like an insecurity an=
d not being satisfied listening to it over and over, but I=E2=80=99m consta=
ntly asking myself =E2=80=98Could it be better?=E2=80=99 It could take me t=
hree hours to add this little milisecond sound that nobody but me will ever=
 know is there, but I do it,=E2=80=9D Gartner says of his somehow self-effa=
cing self-confidence. =E2=80=9CI get into tweaker mode; I=E2=80=99m just si=
tting there tweaking for ten hours straight on this sound or that track and=
 putting everything together and coming up with something else.=E2=80=9D=0A=
=0ATake =E2=80=9CForever,=E2=80=9D the menacingly not-what-you=E2=80=99d-ex=
pect will.i.am collab on Weekend In America. It=E2=80=99s a track that, wit=
h its ominous chord progression and middla-nowhere =E2=80=9CRIP=E2=80=9D sh=
out-out to DJ AM from will, is as unlikely as it is, literally, amazing. =
=E2=80=9CThat=E2=80=99s just me sitting with my keyboard and pounding out c=
hord progressions for three days and coming up with a hundred or so and som=
e of them are good and a few of them are great, until finally I get to that=
 one where I can say, =E2=80=98This is something I can spend three weeks ma=
king into something,'=E2=80=9D says Gartner.=0A=0AHe attributes this spike =
in his equal parts obsessive-compulsive/obsessive-creative disorder in part=
 to his recent move from Austin, TX to Los Angeles. =E2=80=9CI had one frie=
nd in Austin - who I met for breakfast once every six weeks. I woke, up, we=
nt to Starbucks, made music, drove to the airport, flew out, and flew home.=
 My studio was in the master bedroom. With my house in California, it=E2=80=
=99s in a guest room - I decided I want to make the master bedroom for slee=
ping.=E2=80=9D=0A=0AThere are no love songs on Weekend In America, but ther=
e is a new love: hip-hop. =E2=80=9CStill My Lady=E2=80=9D features Omarion,=
 Dipset=E2=80=99s Jim Jones and Cam=E2=80=99ron trade verses on =E2=80=9CCi=
rcus Freaks,=E2=80=9D and Eve brings it on =E2=80=9CGet =E2=80=98Em=E2=80=
=9D as highlights on the album.=0A=0A=E2=80=9CRap music is actually all I l=
isten to when I can just listen to music, like in my car. I spend so much t=
ime listening to dance music, rap is something I can just enjoy,=E2=80=9D W=
olfgang Gartner explains. =E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99m not trying to do all these c=
ollaborations with rappers to be trendy,=E2=80=9D he adds. =E2=80=9CI reach=
ed out to each of them to make sure they were down and understood where I w=
as coming from. I honestly like hip-hop almost as much as I like dance musi=
c, so it=E2=80=99s a perfect combination.=E2=80=9D=0A=0AIt should come as n=
o surprse then that the track that opens Weekend In America is =E2=80=9CGet=
 =E2=80=98Em=E2=80=9D featuring Eve. Gartner explains: =E2=80=9CI was in Ne=
w York playing Pacha so I actually went into the studio and worked with her=
 on the track, looping it, trying stuff out,=E2=80=9D he says. =E2=80=9CShe=
 came up with, =E2=80=98Party round the world/All my fly people no nasty gi=
rls/Jet planes baby that=E2=80=99s me/Come on people now sing along with me=
.=E2=80=99 We knew that was the hook. It sounds like something Sugarhill Ga=
ng would have done, like it knows it=E2=80=99s this classic-sounding hook.=
=E2=80=9D=0A=0AThe addition of rappers is all part of the progression of We=
ekend In America, he says: =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s getting progressively hard=
er to make music without hearing vocals and vocal melodies on it - that=E2=
=80=99s what comes naturally to me.=E2=80=9D=0A=0AOf course, =E2=80=9Cnatur=
ally=E2=80=9D is an evolving word in the Wolfgang Gartner lexicon. As =E2=
=80=9CMenage A Trois=E2=80=9D proves, you don=E2=80=99t need a vocalist to =
hear voices. Another of Gartner=E2=80=99s mantras is that he=E2=80=99s maki=
ng music for the future, and =E2=80=9CMenage A Trois=E2=80=9D sounds straig=
ht outta 2016: fully articulated synth lines trading verses in their own fr=
eaked-frequencies like MCs spitting in some as-yet undecipherable tongue. =
=E2=80=9CThe thing that makes that track for me is how conceptually differe=
nt it is for me,=E2=80=9D Gartner offers. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s literally j=
ust a bunch of random pieces from all over the place and some Fender Rhodes=
 piano and this bass tone and then this vocal snippet that sounds like it=
=E2=80=99s saying =E2=80=98Menage A Trois.=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D=0A=0ARandom, y=
es, but Weekend In America is nothing if not inspired by Wolfgang Gartner=
=E2=80=99s almost contradictory need to evoke his best live moments while p=
ushing himself to top them - and then gig some more to create new moments t=
o top: =E2=80=9CMantra number three for me is that when I=E2=80=99m writing=
 I think about the last really amazing show that was f$%ing unbelievable fo=
r whatever reason - everything I make is designed for playing out. I get su=
per tired of playing out every weekend, having one day at home. But I know =
I need to get out there - I have to do it for market research,=E2=80=9D he =
says.=0A=0AAs Weekend In America proves, it=E2=80=99s often the tracks that=
 are most obsessed over privately that make the biggest impact publicly. Ta=
ke the Electric Daisy Carnival festival =E2=80=9811 favorite =E2=80=9CSpace=
 Junk,=E2=80=9D caned as it was in several sets, which seems to take everyt=
hing great and terrible over the last 15 years of dance music - vintage syn=
ths, hands-in-the-air trance flutter and dubstep=E2=80=99s modulated stamme=
r, and fits it in one track - often in a single measure, sometimes even a s=
ingle bar. =E2=80=9CThat=E2=80=99s the one that haunts me,=E2=80=9D Youngma=
n admits. =E2=80=9CThat=E2=80=99s the one I=E2=80=99m always trying to top.=
=E2=80=9D Ironically, it=E2=80=99s also the one that contradicts another Wo=
lfgang Gartner myth: that Youngman is himself a gearhead.=0A=0A=E2=80=9CI=
=E2=80=99m actually working on Windows XP with limited RAM, on Abelton and =
three vintage synths - one of which I don=E2=80=99t even use anymore,=E2=80=
=9D he admits. =E2=80=9CMy computer=E2=80=99s constantly freezing up and ma=
xing out,=E2=80=9D he says. =E2=80=9CBut I=E2=80=99m more concerned with mu=
sic than technology. I=E2=80=99m willing to write the entire breakdown of =
=E2=80=98Space Junk=E2=80=99 on an old keyboard with a busted arpeggiator t=
hat comes out so muddy that I have to deal with the hassle of spending a wh=
ole day editing it in 16th notes,=E2=80=9D he continues. =E2=80=9CBut the f=
act that it came out of a synth - and not a plug-in - makes it totally wort=
h the day I spent.=E2=80=9D=0A=0ALikewise =E2=80=9CIllmerica,=E2=80=9D with=
 its long, phantasmic synthesizer chord progression, belie the heart of a c=
omposer over the somehow soulful rhythm sections that chug and chew more th=
an chop or churn- Youngman=E2=80=99s past life as a Kerri Chandler-loving h=
ousehead living on. That, he says, and his other past life: third grade pia=
no virtuoso. =E2=80=9CMy parents made me take classical lessons,=E2=80=9D G=
artner laughs. =E2=80=9CI played in competitions at local colleges with a b=
unch of other ten year-olds and I think I won a couple of them. Now I could=
n=E2=80=99t play to save my life, but that foundation is there.=E2=80=9D=0A=
=0AAnd therein might lay the greatest mantra/myth of the Wolfgang Gartner s=
tory and the greatest contradiction of Weekend in America: that it=E2=80=99=
s just dance music. =E2=80=9CI would think I would hate what=E2=80=99s main=
stream, but the truth of it is, the dance world makes sense to me,=E2=80=9D=
 says Wolf. =E2=80=9CI understand how and why it creates the response that =
it does with people.=E2=80=9D That said, as Weekend in America shows in its=
 byzantine soul, kaleidoscopic command of frequencies and impossibly imagin=
ative arrangements, Weekend in America the artist is answering to an altoge=
ther higher power and potential, one the Wolfgang Gartner massive has the g=
ood fortune of being able to get onto the floor and out of their heads to e=
very weekend.=0A=0ABut for Wolfgang Gartner, the introverted empath spendin=
g thousands of hours in isolation making these tracks that will connect him=
 to tens, even hundreds of thousands of people at a time, Weekend In Americ=
a is party-rocking speaker-freq=E2=80=99-ing as self-realization. =E2=80=9C=
I can imagine it and I know something amazing that=E2=80=99s never been hea=
rd before is possible. Occasionally it=E2=80=99s even something I can alrea=
dy hear in my head and that=E2=80=99s why I have to make this music.=E2=80=
=9D
