COMEDY, CABARET, AND COFFEE TALK with RYAN G. HINDS
featuring CATHERINE HERNANDEZ, MAN CHYNA, and FAY SLIFT
Award-winning performance artist Ryan G. Hinds returns with a cabaret evening in a chat show format to heal your post-Valentine’s heartburn. Expect a little bit of everything: music, gossip, stiff drinks, and fabulous guests. The Grid says: “Hinds is hilarious; makes a great case for the lost art of cabaret in Toronto. His show made me giddy!” (Paul Livingston-Aguirre).
CATHERINE HERNANDEZ is the Artistic Director of Sulong Theatre. Her play “Eating with Lola”, a one-woman puppet show, has toured internationally in the US and Colombia, and recently enjoyed a remount at Toronto’s Glad Day Bookshop. In 2007, her first play, Singkil, was directed by Nina Lee Aquino, produced by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company in association with Factory Theatre and garnered seven Dora Mavor Moore nominations. She followed that with a playwright residency at Theatre Passe Muraille’s 08/09, after which she was named the theatre’s Associate Producer in 2009/2010. On September 21 2012, Catherine immersed herself in a lifeboat filled with filthy water for 24 hours without access to food. The event, named Operation Lifeboat, raised money and awareness for the UN-Natural recurring disasters in the Philippines.
MAN CHYNA is the number one "cummunist" rapper in the game, and has spit rhymes all over Canada and China, from Beijing to Vancouver. He's played Winnipeg Pride, rap shows in Montreal, rodeo parties in Ottawa, and dive bars in Shanghai. Highlights have included dancing for Peaches and opening for Heems (Das Racist). His video Brokeback That Ass Up has been showcased at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and, locally, he's a Steers and Queers favourite. This "gay rural Chinese rapper," has been described (outragedc.com) as, "literally all of tea party's worst fears," and his work "is sure to unsettle kindly palefaced midwesterners, spook immigrant grandparents of all flavors, and can actually be used to banish Andrew Breitbart’s ghost."
FAY SLIFT is John Paul Kane who fell in love with theatre when studying at the University of Guelph and spends his day performing as a grade 2/3 teacher. For the last five years Fay Slift has been a creative pursuit he stumbled into. He has had many opportunities of collaborating with many creative talents, including the Scandelles, Gentleman Reg, Peaches Christ, John Waters and 2boystv. Fay was the recipient of Xtra Magazine's Top 10 Arts Achievements of 2008. He is excited to be working with so many creative and talented friends on Rhubarb 2013 and is hopeful that everyone will leave with a smile on their face. Thanks to the Hawe, the Burly Gurly Collective and friends for their love and support.
The vivacious and salacious RYAN HINDS is an award-winning singer, dancer, actor, and writer. He has written the Toronto at Night column in Xtra for 3 years and recently made his cabaret debut in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ryan has created critically acclaimed work for Pride, Nuit Blanche, and Summerworks, and has performed sold-out cabaret events in Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Los Angeles, and New York City. He has shared stages and screens with Liza Minnelli, Douglas Coupland, Sky Gilbert, The Scandelles, Debbie Reynolds, and many more.
