In the third part of his award winning series Empire of the Word, Mark Johnston creates a fascinating narrative by which we experience, through the voice of Canadian writer Alberto Manguel, the real dangers of censorship. The documentary highlights the efforts of those who battle to preserve their intellectual independence through examples of forbidden reading and the consequences censorship imposes on writers and readers alike.
"Forbidden Reading" with its international perspective is a real treat for anyone concerned about the values which are celebrated during Freedom to Read week, an annual national event that raises awareness about the challenges to our freedom to read.
Director Mark Johnston and Producer Amanda Handy will join us for a Q&A session after the screening.
"Forbidden Reading", 52 min., 2009.
