Holidays are all about doing things at the last minute, and this funky little party featuring two of Toronto’s funkiest world-groove bands is no exception. Get on down to Supermarket in Kensington Market as Brainfudge and Santerias serve up season’s greetings of world-class funk!
“(He) mysteriously transcends, through pulsating spongy reggae, afro-latin tinged space rock, sampled sound bites, some mighty Moog workouts, blues, downtempo, environmental soundscapes, acoustic jams, world rhythmic jazz, shades of house, township sounds, sonic experimentation, dub, rock.” (DJ Excavator - Sense-Aestherica - United Kingdom)
Chris Bottomley's Brainfudge is Toronto's original world-funk collective. Since 1990, more or less everybody who's been anybody in the Toronto's jazz-funk scene has joined the veteran bass thumper, singer and percussionist as part of Brainfudge at one time or another - Rich Underhill, Perry White, Odel Johnson, Eric St. Laurent, Dean Stone, it's truly a long and illustrious list. Their live shows from Queen West's mid 90s glory days remain the stuff of legend, and a collection of those timeless parties will be released as a live album in the not-too-distant future.
People he's performed and toured with include; Donne' Roberts, Wayne Lavallee, John Bottomley, The Look People, Boogiewall Soundsystem, The Mofunk Collective, Rich Underhill's Funk Explosion, The Kensington Horns, West African percussion ensemble Ainike and Guelph’s Eccodek.
This Toronto ensemble combines influences of their diverse backgrounds (Chilean, Peruvian, Argentine, and Canadian) to the forefront of their sound in a way that has drawn comparisons to such ensembles as, Ojos de Brujo, Bebe, and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. The band is comprised of members: Oriana Barbato (bass); Jay Guerriere (percussion, vocals); Juan Dino Toledo (guitar, vocals), Kevin Richards (drums), Christopher Molder (keys) and Irene Torres (lead vocals, percussion).
An eclectic blend of cajon, timbales, flamenco guitar, electric bass, drums and keys, accompanied by rich vocals in English and Spanish, Santerias explores old and new world musical influences, to create a sound that is uniquely their own.
