North American Premier of Penelope Skinner's award winning show "EIGENGRAU"

The Red One Theatre Collective is proud to support the North American Premiere of award-winning playwright Penelope Skinner's dark comedy Eigengrau, presented by the Perfect Darkness Co-op.

Critically acclaimed director/actor David Tompa (for Red One Theatre: Tape, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Proof) brings together Shaw Festival veteran Jeff Irving (Sound of Music-Mirvish Prod., December Man), and international actress Helen Johns (London Classic Theatre’s Abigail’s Party, CTV’s The Listener) in this highly provocative British comedy: Eigengrau. Appearing alongside them are rising film and television actor Kristian Bruun (Flying Horsie Films’ Blood Pressure, CTV’s Murdoch Mysteries) and emerging talent Claire Armstrong (Ghostly Encounters, Calendar Girls).

Rose (Helen Johns) believes in true love and believes that Mark (Jeff Irving) is it. Her flatmate Cassie (Claire Armstrong) lobbies parliament on behalf of a feminist organization, but struggles with a burgeoning attraction to Mark, who seems to know little of women’s rights. Meanwhile Mark’s flatmate Tim Muffin (Kristian Bruun) struggles to get out of bed in the morning.

Penelope Skinner's elegantly plotted play premiered in London at the Bush Theatre in 2010 to critical acclaim. The Guardian dubbed it a “hugely enjoyable tragic-comedy, an urban fairytale about a generation with nothing left to believe in while adrift in the big city. The play is brilliantly funny; the fantastic lines coming fast and furious.” In 2011 Ms. Skinner was the recipient of both the Evening Standard and George Devine Awards for Most Promising Playwright. Perfect Darkness’ Toronto production will mark the premiere of Eigengrau in North America, as well as the first Canadian performance of a work by this exciting writer.

Eigengrau [ay-gen-gr-ow ] will be mounted at the Lower Ossington Theatre by Perfect Darkness Co-op, with support from the Red One Theatre Collective, whose inventive and exciting productions have made them one of Toronto’s most unique and progressive young companies.

Please note that the play contains mature themes.
