Know Your Rights Workshop at York DisOrientation

In this workshop we will outline your legal rights in regards to police interactions, the basics of what happens upon arrest and, in going through the court process, and suggest some practical things to consider as you prepare to go out on the streets. We do this with a solidarity approach and with a focus on those who are most vulnerable to arrest/criminalization.

The Movement Defence Committee [MDC] is an autonomous working group of the Law Union of Ontario made up of
legal workers, law students, activists and lawyers which provides legal support to progressive organizations and activists in Toronto. We recognize that members of oppressed groups are at higher risk when they encounter the law and we work to provide information and support that is specific to these groups.

About the facilitators:

Mac Scott is an anarchist who works with the law, go figure! He works with No One Is Illegal and the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and the Movement Defense Committee (of the Law Union of Ontario). In his free time he enjoys his collective house, beer, bad suits and science fiction not necessarily in that order.

Sterling Stutz is a community organizer living in Toronto. She works with the Movement Defence Committee and a variety of other groups focusing on prisoner support and kid-inclusivity. She has dreams of running a zine distro and of becoming a midwife.
