M: Made at the turn of the period when the revolutionary aural experience of sound had just been introduced in the Cinemas, M, marks a distinctive impression on the public (even to this day) by its execution of a stunning thriller.
Revolving around the hushed urban anxiety of a child murderer who roams rampant among the streets of Berlin, M, the antagonistic terror of the killer permeates amongst the neighborhood inciting fear in the public, the police and even the illicit-minds of criminals. The child killer astonishingly played by Peter Lorre, firmly established him as one of the most horrific predators ever created with a haunting whistle to signify into the deepest fears of our own personal anxieties. His performance in the film is so eerily memorable both with his staunch grim appearance and oddly tinned voice that he had no other choice but to be type-casted ever since playing into our collective fears. Playing at what public hysteria, outcries, and terror can do for a society whether positive or negative, the film posits in a world where no one is truly justified as fractured and complicated as we all are.
The film also earns praise from Fritz Lang, a phenomenal auteur who got his start in silent film and utilized his acute sensibilities to decorate the cinematographically-rich yet sparse ambience with austere audio to make us jump at its subtle nuances. A rare treat of a screening, M is not to be missed even if you have or haven't seen it.
Kiss Me Deadly: In this masterful adaptation of Mickey Spillane's hard-boiled novel, director Robert Aldrich plays with the conventions of film noir, telling the subversive story of Mike Hammer, a private eye that goes looking for the men who murdered a female hitchhiker that he picked up one night. This film will keep your attention right up until the frightening finale, which no one could possibly expect.
The ordering might be changed but it's believed to be M first and then Kiss Me Deadly.
