On Sunday August 16th, Samba on Dundas will once again bring the sounds, sights and flavours of Brazil to Dundas Street West.
Just as the Dundas West BIA has grown significantly since coming into being in 2006, so has the BIA’s signature community festival expanded and developed artistically. This year the festivities will kick off at 1pm on Gladstone Avenue north of Dundas, before heading west a block and a half to Teresa’s Place at 1525 Dundas West, a parkette created by the Dundas West BIA in collaboration with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC). Festivities at the TCHC site should begin at about 2:15pm
The 2009 installment of Samba on Dundas will feature two full percussion ensembles - Samba Squad and Escola de Samba as well as a Bossa Nova set by Trio Copacabana.
Capoeira Camera will wow audiences with Brazil’s famours martial art and the beautiful dancers of Samba Brasil Entertainment, Afrolusophone and Dance Migration will once again add a variety of traditional choreography styles to the festivities. In between the acts, Maná Lounge Bar resident DJ Vince will be spinning forró, pagode, axé, funk, reggaeton, hip-hop and more.
Children’s activities will include percussion make and shake workshops, soccer kicks and dress up!
MORE MUSICAL GUESTS TO BE ANNOUNCED.
Local merchants are working together to offer refreshments, a traditional Brazilian feijuada meal, as well as family drumming, art workshops and dance lessons.
Sponsored by Downtown Lumber, Scotia Bank and No Frills, this festival is funded in part by a City of Toronto Community Festival and Special Events grant. The Dundas West BIA would like to thank the Toronto Community Housing Corporation for their generous donation of the space for this year’s SAMBA ON DUNDAS.
