Coffee Cup Controversy - Call Your Councillor?

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / November 24, 2008

20081124_coffeecup01a.jpgI spotted this computer printed and hand-written public appeal taped to the drive-thru pickup window at a Tim Hortons out in the west end.

Based on the URL on the bottom of the page, it would appear that the political cartoon (that was run in the November 10th edition of the Toronto Star) has been sent to Tim Hortons' employees via an internal email. In this case, an employee appears to have decided to deliver the message to every customer that uses the drive-thru as well.

Will this garner support for their cause? I'm not sure. I'm almost inclined to call my councillor and let him know that Tim Hortons needs to continue to do more to curb non-recyclable waste, even if it means taking a hit to profit margins.

City Hall will revisit the coffee cup issue in April of 2009.

Photos taken with my camera phone.

I would doubt that it's an employee, it's probably more likely that an TH executive is behind it as employee's would not be allowed to post anything in public view. It's just another company trying to weasel it's way out of being responsible and doing the right thing, thinking they are above everyone else.

@ Bubba

IMO, if this came from an exec level, it wouldn't contain punctuation errors and be hand-written.

Tim Horton's is pretty bad with travel mugs too. They measure your coffee in a paper cup and then throw it away. Big thread about it here:

Not an employee and not an exec but I suspect a Franchisee.

@Ryan

hillarious but so true - it happens a lot. they need to invest in some sort of a vessel...with measurements etched on the side...oh, wait...they need a measuring cup!!! (with a larger capacity than one cup, of course)

No matter who it is, someone obviously doesn't know how to use even Powerpoint (ugh) to make a decent sign. For shame.

Strange though it may seem, I bet the TH employees at highway locations deal with travel mugs betters, since a lot of truckers do use them. I've been on the road a fair bit of late and have noticed that out on the 401, they don't do the cup measuring; they just took my word that it was medium. Maybe they need to start some kind of internal 'best practices' type of thing.

just a quick thought. We can't expect concious-void corporations to want to make changes (environmentally or socially), if it is at their expense. In fact, we should expect them to do whatever it takes to maximize their profit margins, ie. the above. That's how big business is run, it's fucked, and needs radical reformation, but, that's how it is. So, realistically, it's up to the people, the citizens, you and me, to be the change. After seeing this, Tim Horton's is now our enemy, fuck them. And the plan of attack is simple, don't ever go there again! It's that simple.

I think you are thinking like sukrat, but I think you should cover the other side of the topic in the post too...
