This Week in Food rounds up the week's food news, restaurants openings and closings, chef movements and upcoming food events in Toronto. Find us here every Friday morning.
OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS
- Noka at 513 Bloor West opens tonight (Friday, April 27th) serving up contemporary Japanese cuisine & sushi bar selections. Tonight's grand opening promises a complimentary dinner starting at 6pm - first come first serve.
- Panier Rouge (1425 Yonge Street) opened shop this week and is now offering the midtown crowd healthy take-away lunch options like pulled turkey with cranberry salsa wrap. Now open Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6pm.
- ChaLau Dim Sum reopened this week at 476 Yonge Street after shuttering their Yonge and Eglington location (ChaLui) last year.
- The Fuzzbox at 1246 Danforth Avenue is now open for business serving up East Coast donairs.
- Tea 'n' Bannock is now open at 1294 Gerrard East, serving up a taste of Aboriginal Canada on the edge of Toronto's Little India.
- The Chickery (130 Spadina Ave) is set for a May 1st opening. David Adjey (Restaurant Makeover) and Danny Farbman (What A Bagel) team up to launch this rotisserie chicken resto that also promises delivery.
- The Depanneur hosts a drop-in dinner tonight (April 27th) featuring spring vegetable chowder from Dep soup maven Lisa Kates and cheddar or jalapeño popovers with herbed butter from Popovergirl, Lora Bertolo. Soup and two popovers are nine bucks.
- Death Row Meals: The Bitter Truth takes place Sunday, April 29th at Veritas (234 King Street East) and explores cooking with cocktail bitters. Tickets are still available for this dinner featuring 10 courses and a surprise from a guest chef.
- An Evening of Spanish Gastronomy with Jaime Kennedy at Gilead Cafe (4 Gilead Place) takes place on Monday, April 30th at 6:30pm.
- DishCrawl returns to Roncesvalles Village on Wednesday, May 2nd at 7pm.
- Tickets are still available for the Ultimate Food Challenge on Wednesday, May 2nd at George Brown College (300 Adelaide Street East). In support of the Daily Bread Food Bank, Nick auf der Mauer (Porchetta & Co.), Steve Gonzalez (Niagara Street Café, Origin) and Rob Rossi (Bestellen) will compete to turn an ordinary food hamper into champion dishes.
- David Chang of Momofuku fame is set to open a 3-floor multi-concept eatery on July 28th next to the Shangri-La Hotel, all other details (including the name) are still in the works.
- Jason Becker will now helm the kitchen at Fabarnak (519 Church Street) after the departure of Executive Chef Eric Wood.
- Chef Rob Gentile (Buca), Chef Lora Kirk (Ruby Watchco), and Chef Graham Pelley (e11even) are just a few of the talented chefs announced to host demonstrations and tastings each weekend in May for The Cheese Boutique's 9th annual Festival of Chefs.
- It's Lucky Gnocchi Day at Piola Restaurant (1165 Queen Street West) on Sunday, April 29th. This monthly event serves up all-you-can-eat gnocchi family style.
- Celebrate the launch of the AGO's Picasso exhibition with a Spanish-inspired prix fixe menu. Starting May 1st (until August 24th), Frank at 317 Dundas Street West is offering a $65 combo package that includes admission to Picasso, audio guide, and 3 course dinner.

- The origins of the 'pickle' are revealed in a documentary launched this week about Toronto's underground Secret Pickle Supper Club.
