Joseph Shabason Is What He Eats: Everything All The Time

Posted by Lauren / February 4, 2009

Everything All The Time.jpgIn a new monthly feature "You Are What You Eat" I will be talking to Toronto personalities, musicians, artists and other interesting folks about where, how and what they eat. After all, food is the window to the soul.

This month Joseph Shabason (photo front and centre), musician and member of Toronto band Everything All The Time, shares his deepest, darkest food secrets with me. OK, they're neither deep nor dark, but they're fun.

blogTO: What is your favourite breakfast spot in the city?

Joseph Shabason: Saving Grace. Hands Down.

What's your most guilty food pleasure?

Smartfood. I eat an entire bag to myself at least twice a week.

What's one warm & fuzzy, and one really bad food memory from your childhood?

A warm and fuzzy one is eating granola bars on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park. Everything tastes better when you you've been paddling all day. A bad one is my mother making me eat my zucchini when I was about 5 years old. At the time I hated it so much I vomited.

What would you request as your last meal?

Fried crispy noodles with vegetables, tofu and black been sauce from Swatow. Then I would eat a bag of Smartfood for dessert.

Are you a coffee drinker? If so, how many cups per day and what's your go-to coffee joint?

I usually have one coffee a day (sometimes more depending on how crazy the day is). My favorite morning ritual is to wake up and go to The Common to have an espresso before going to the YMCA.

Do you crave salty or sweet?

Salty all the way. The only sweet thing I ever crave is peanut M&Ms.

Do you cook?

I do. When I have time, I love to make big meals that I can freeze for the week. I also love cooking big breakfasts.

If I were a food, I would be a BLANK because BLANK.

If I were a food I would be a clove of garlic because people would love how good I make everything taste.

Weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

A scab from my knee.

What's your favourite meal of the day? Why?

Brunch. I think it's because you always end up eating it with friends.

What is your favourite food related song (e.g. "Strawberry Fields" by the Beatles)?

Lollipop by Lil' Wayne

If you had to pair a song with food, like pairing a wine with food, what two would you choose?

I would pair "But Not For Me" by Chet Baker with a TV dinner for one.

Joseph graces Everything All The Time with his vocal, keyboard and saxophone stylings. The band plays this Thursday February 5th at the Horseshoe Tavern, 9:30pm.

Saving Grace is killer; but I am a partial to petit dejeuner for brunching needs

Ya know, I've been to Saving Grace and I just don't know what all the hype. I was so disappointed by the food, my breakfast was cold and eating cold bacon sucks big time. I prefer Edward Levesque's out in Leslieville.

By the way, I thought maybe Joseph would have picked his Mother's mung bean salad! :)

Oh, yes, such a wonderful new feature.

Although I think I liked it better the first time I saw it, when it was called "Tasting T.O. With..." and was over on TasteTO.com:

Hi "Joe",

Although people have been asking other people about their food and eating preferences since before the discovery of fire (there are likely cave drawings to prove it), this is a new feature on blogTO.

Hopefully you can still enjoy Lauren's take on the concept, and appreciate that the idea isn't new by any stretch.

Greg from TasteTO here. We were getting a bunch of hits from this page, so I came over to see why. Thanks to "Joe" for the shout-out, but as Jerrold notes, this isn't exactly a new thing. And even if BlogTO is burning us, I guess we should be flattered...
