Steam Whistle Sending Shipment to Canadian Troops

Spending this past weekend in Ottawa I was happy to see how many bars were stocking Steam Whistle. I hadn't given our local beer enough credit, thinking it was primarily a Toronto thing. It makes sense though, Ottawa, the capital of our nation, is only a few hours away. And just when I thought that Steam Whistle couldn't get any more patriotic, I hear that they are shipping beer to the Canadian Forces stationed in Afghanistan.

I can't think of a better way to show support for our troops. Whether or not I agree with Canada's role in Afghanistan is not important. The fact is: those are Canadians out there, and they deserve some beer!

"I credit the staff for undertaking this worthy initiative. The staff suggested we try to help the troops enjoy a taste of home for their Christmas party. Every staff member donated one week's worth of their staff beer for the Armed Forces Christmas Party," explained Cam Heaps, President of Steam Whistle. It was nice seeing the Toronto beer only as far away as Ottawa; I can only imagine what it would be like for a Torontonian on duty to open the signature green case.

I'm starting to get creeped out by the degree to which Steam Whistle will give free beer to ANYBODY. We could ask SW to give free beer to our next blogTO meeting and I guarantee we'd get it. Maybe the high water-to-actual-beer ratio in each bottle of Steam Whistle makes it cheap to give away. (Whoops, there goes any hope of them giving us free beer for our next blogTO meeting.)

Send the army some Creemore or something.

Wait a moment. Free beer = bad?

and...

Creemore? Why not just send them some molson canadian or another molson owned beer?

I don't think they gave free beer to the troops, that was the staff's OWN beer they gave them.

I'm not saying free beer is bad. I'm saying that if I want water, I go drink from a tap.

Steam Whistle makes a fine microbrew hoppy Pilsner. Creemore is also good beer, but an amber malt lager. Comparing the two (even though they're both lagers) is like comparing a tasty orange to a delicious tangerine :)

Matt,

Why so down on Steam Whistle? It's not Guinness but it's a good lighter tasting beer.

Also, water is one of the most important ingredients of beer but it's not added to beer. A "water-to-actual-beer ratio" is silliness. :)

I knew kicking off a beer fight would yield good comments. :)

No, honestly, I'm just not a Steam Whistle guy. It's nothing personal. I'm sure they're fine people who look after their neighbours, are kind to their pets, and rarely (if ever) steal.

Creemore is my favorite beer. When I lived in Japan for two years there was nothing I missed more (sorry, Mom!) ;)

There's no winning a beer argument, especially after a few. But I just don't get the creemore thing. I like it okay, but if I want a flavourful beer I think it comes up short. Usually St. Andre is my first choice for flavour if it's on tap.
