Critter-free Food

And I'm not just saying that to encourage vegetarianism.

Twice in the past four or five months, I've found live, creepy crawlies in my foodstuff. Cereal and couscous. (Aren't you glad I didn't post pictures). And although the manufacturers were kind enough to apologize and send me coupons for replacement items - how can I ever eat anything out of a cardboard box again?

Is it where I'm shopping? Is my attempt to spend as little as possible on groceries making me more succeptible to infestations? (And I keep my kitchen clean, by the way). How can a girl get a decent meal for a decent price without having to pick weevils out of her dinner?

It might be where you're shopping, but it could also be your cupboards. I once had little mothlike things (which had a wiggly white maggot-y stage) in all my bulk food - they started in a bag of rice someone had given me (I actually found moths inside it, an unopened bag) and then I found the worm things in other bags of food - they get through somehow and lay eggs.

Destroy everything in that cupboard! Or, if you're tougher, microwave it or something to kill the grossness. Then try to keep bulk/bagged foods in jars.

unfortunetly such is the way of food storage. I havent had any in while thank god. Some of the critters live in the cardboard boxes of stuff, or just arent noticed at the plants. But as said above make sure you clean out any cupboard taht had otehr stuff in proximity that they can get to. And I highly recommend goign to ikea or some other place and buying big glass jars with lids or plastic to tranfer any kind of grains or pasta into out of the boxes etc.
I love going to cook me some kraft dinner and I come back to the pot and floating in the water are all nice and boiled little creatures.. mmmmmm.

Ooh. Had similar problems a while back in my parents' house. I once was about to take a bite from my cookie and lo'! There was a tiny white "crumb", flipping around. I'm glad I stopped to brush it off...

But hearing this makes me realize that where I live now, an apartment, is probably more susceptible to this kind of thing. Time to buy some glass jars for my cereal!

I live in a bomb shelter with nothing but canned goods, and I order Pizza a lot. I'm a fat, pale-skinned recluse, but I have no bug problems...

...but I'm lonely. So very very lonely.

Oh dear..this brings to mind the one experience I had with maggots (I think they were maggots). My mother in law sent some uncooked rice along to me in a sealed tupperware. After a few months I went to use it and saw crawling maggots inside. I threw the whole batch out! I was so grossed out. I believe they came with the rice though.
