Tern might be one of the smallest art supply stores in Toronto. It's a cramped space on Queen, just west of Trinity Bellwoods. Quite likely most people walk by (on their way to Fresh, Swan etc.) without even noticing it's there.
And that would be too bad, because inside it's a gem. While it might not look like much, I've found Tern to have among the best custom built and stretched canvas options in the city, as well as good prices on Golden and other paints. The staff is also super-friendly and won't shy away from trashing a product they sell if they think it's not the right product for your needs.
Around since 1983, Tern positions itself as a store for artISTs. And their specialty is definitely canvas. So, if you're looking for canvas, this store should definitely be on your shortlist. For other art supplies like, say, easels, brushes, paper and portfolio bags there are other stores in the city that have a much more robust selection.
Other stuff worth shopping here for: Kama oil paints and mediums, custom stretchers and birch ply painting surfaces.
