I Deal Coffee on Queen Goes Deadpool. Is Madras Pantry Next?

Leslieville isn't hurting for quality cafes, but it's still disappointing to see that I Deal Coffee on Queen East has closed their doors. The Queen and Ashdale location was the most recent addition to the I Deal family and arguably its nicest spot. It was larger and brighter than the Kensington and Ossington outposts and was used to supply roasted beans and baked treats to the other cafes.

Most likely it was the location that killed it though. This side of Queen near Coxwell isn't really a retail or restaurant hot spot and walk by traffic is slim. It was also never able to lure many customers from the much more bustling Red Rocket a little further west.

It's Deadpool for Get Real Cafe, Blackstone Organic Meats, Six Shooter Records and Left Feet

It's time to catch up on a number of Deadpool sightings from the past few weeks. On Ossington, brunch and vegetarian fave Get Real Cafe has become the latest casualty on the block between Argyle and Foxley. Following in the footsteps of the recently closed Le Bar a Soupe, Get Real either couldn't cope with a 30% rent increase demanded by their landlord OR were behind in their rent. Either way, they'll be missed and the street is down a lunch option (although Pizzeria Libretto recently started offering lunch service so maybe everything evens out).

On Ossington, Le Bar A Soupe has closed after warming west-enders' stomachs with homemade goodness for the past few years.
Ho-Lee-Chow Joins the Deadpool, Or Does It?

Although it's been reported in various <a href="http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20091007/hlc_closes_091007/20091007/?hub=TorontoNewHome"target=_blank>Toronto media outlets (other coverage <a href="http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2009/10/07/11336411.html"target=_blank>here and <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/10/07/ho-lee-chow-shut-down941.html"target=_blank>here) that Ho-Lee-Chow has closed all its GTA locations, it appears that this isn't entirely true -- at least for now.

After receiving a strange phone call from the location nearest to me on Monday that urged me to place future orders using a new phone number, I was suspicious of yesterday's news that each and every location was shutting down. So, just to make sure, I decided to make a trip up the road to have a look for myself. Sure enough, I found the St. Clair and Winona location operating as usual.

Mr. Movie Goes to the Deadpool in Style

Mr. Movie, an independent video rental store near Ryerson University, closed for business at the end of September. It was a sad loss for loyal students and residents of the Merchandise Lofts in which it was based; but in this era of video on demand, Zip.ca and online streaming (legal or otherwise) the fact Mr. Movie was losing money and customers wasn't altogether surprising.

It's nice to see, though, that the owners have a sense of humour about the situation. In a note posted to their front door (see below), they take some time to poke fun at themselves and their customers.

Another Bookstore in the Deadpool as TYPE Books on the Danforth Closes

On the same day the city's beloved Pages Books & Magazines closed, an indie in the east end made its last sale. Yesterday, fans of TYPE Books on the Danforth were greeted with papered windows and a sign on the front door announcing its 1+ year run in the neighbourhood had ended.

Sadly, it's not that surprising a development. While the first two TYPE stores on Queen West and Spadina seem to get a steady stream of visitors, the third branch on the Danforth was often empty. I last bought a book there on December 24th (usually a busy day for last minute shoppers) and I was the only one in the store for about 20 minutes.

Greenavi Cafe in the Deadpool

Greenavi is no more. Papered windows and a sign posted to the front door have sealed the deal for the once popular cafe on Queen West that became a good neighbourhood pit stop for some organic snacks and free WiFi. But with rents between Spadina and Bathurst not getting any lower; and plenty of local competition from the major chains and indie darlings like Tequila Bookworm the cafe just couldn't make it.

Many might remember this isn't the first time Greenavi owner Ellen Soyoung Lee couldn't make a cafe fly in this space. Her previous incarnation Just Us! lacked personality and felt too chain like. It didn't last long. The re-thought Greenavi was definitely a step up and was voted one of the best new cafes of 2008.

Deadpool Looming for Pages Bookstore

The sad, but perhaps inevitable, news came today that Pages, one of Toronto's most-loved bookstores, will indeed be closing its doors on August 31st. Efforts by owner Marc Glassman to maintain the viability of his business amid "skyrocketing rents" on Queen West have ultimately hit a brick wall in the form of lease-cycle that's finally run its course.

As previously reported, a six month extension worked out with <a href="http://www.pinedaleprop.com/"target=_blank>Pinedale Properties in February was occasion for cautious hope, but the discrepancy between what Glassman can afford to pay and what Pinedale believes it can charge is simply too wide. A fixture for artists, intellectuals and book lovers coming on 30 years, the store will be sorely missed.

I caught up with Marc by phone earlier today to commiserate and ask about what he hopes the future might hold for him and his store.

Honours for the newest deadpool entry go to yet another shop likely crushed by the massive glut of prices in housing.
Last Show for Renaissance Cafe, Then Deadpool

If the Renaissance Cafe was human, it'd be a guy. He's awkward and geeky smart, knows his Waits albums in chronological order. This guy would play guitar. He'd like his craft breweries. Women would flirt with him, but he wouldn't pay them too much attention. He's there for the music, maybe to see a friend's band play. Or sometimes the poetry. Or perhaps just jonesing for some nachos with very generous portions of cheese.

So it'll be sad to see this guy leave our presence for good. Renaissance Cafe, found at 1938 Danforth east of Woodbine, is entering the deadpool. After this Sunday, east-end folk songwriters need to find a new stage. There'll be no more Tinfoil Hat parties (Funkless lives on, of course). And Toronto's east end will have lost a jewel of a venue.

Cluck, Grunt, and Low is Going to the Abattoir

It's pretty busy most of the time, the patio is fantastic in the summer, and (in my not so humble opinion) the food is quite good for the price. But after a relatively short run, the popular Annex southern BBQ joint Cluck, Grunt, and Low is going deadpool - perhaps as early as tonight or tomorrow.

Fans, be warned. If anyone wants one last taste of their favourite lip-smacking barbecued goodness, perhaps they ought to change whatever plans they may have already had for chow this evening, and get over there before it's over.
