Everything's for sale at China House, including its iconic neon sign
China House served its last meal in its red, black and gold dining room last Monday, which left proprietor Jonathan Wise with a room full of stuff he either needed to store or get rid of on Tuesday morning, the legacy of over 50 years of business for the Eglinton West landmark. Which is why almost everything is up for sale, starting this Saturday morning from 11am, while China House will continue to serve takeout and delivery indefinitely out of a side entrance. Deadpool
China House closes its dining room after 53 years
China House, the iconic midtown eatery with the signature retro interior and neon sign, is closing its dining room after over 53 years in business. When the repaired neon sign was re-lit last April, after it was reopened by new owner Jonathan Wise, he told me that he just considered himself the "custodian" of China House, its history, menu and memories. Now he's going to have to pack all that up and find a new place to put it. Deadpool
Criminal Records headed to the deadpool
Right on the heels of Sonic Boom's announcement that it's being forced to change locations this summer, Queen Street's Criminal Records has revealed that it'll be closing its doors for good. At last check, the store had renovations planned, but a note on its MySpace page explains that "due to failed negotiations and reasons of a very personal nature, Criminal Records will be canceling our plans to renovate and instead will be closing our doors." Pizza Gigi destined for the deadpool?
It could be deadpool for Pizza Gigi as police have recently seized the restaurant, which has been deemed an "offence-related property." Last March Gigi's owner, Salvatore Crimi, was charged with multiple drug-related offences, including the possession of what police estimated was $1 million worth of marijuana. Although many expected the popular pizzeria to remain closed following the raid, a few weeks later it was back open, its temporary closure chalked up the minor renovations rather than Crimi's run-in with the law. Is Duggan's Brewery deadpool?
It looks like Duggan's Brewery has gone deadpool. The dreaded Termination Notice to Tenant was posted on the front doors yesterday with the usual "non payment of rent" cited as the reason for lease termination. What this means for the future of the #9 IPA (as well as the other popular offerings) is unclear but bars around Toronto might find themselves with a suddenly available tap if the situation isn't resolved soon. If anyone has any information on the future status of Duggan's please add the info to the comments below. Deadpool
Yasi's Place goes deadpool
Yasi's Place, known for its brunch and signature potatoes, deadpooled last week. According to Yasi Zorlutuna, who first opened the restaurant on Wallace Ave. west of Lansdowne, the business had been struggling financially."I actually sold my share of the business to my partner back in June," she says. "I just wanted to move on, start a family. But I know since then sales have been going down."
