Cefiore is first Toronto casualty in frozen yogurt boom

Posted by Staff / August 9, 2011

ce fiore closedToronto has embraced the frozen yogurt trend like ice cream is going out of style. In the Annex alone, Menchie's, YoYo's Yogurt Cafe and Mon Berri all arrived on the scene in the past year or so to join a fourth option - Cefiore - which as of this month is now deadpool.

Even though Cefiore is a global chain with franchises in the US, Australia and China it perhaps never stood a chance, opening in 2009 on Walmer Road just before the self serve FroYo trend started to take over. I don't think too many people will mourn the loss of Cefiore - it wasn't unique enough to stand out from the pack, but it will certainly raise the question whether the frozen yogurt trend had gotten too far ahead of itself.

i always wonder why these mega chains from the states or europe open in such dumb locations for their first store.

if we ever get a Cheesecake Factory I bet it will be in some suburban wasteland like Vaughn

I live right next door and I've seen this place super busy just a few times. The location is fine, Banditos does quite well next door. I love FroYo but I've never bought anything there and the owner was quite the eye candy.

Every US chain/franchise that has opened in Vaughan has flourished actually.

Idiot.

It is not deadpool. It is just dead. If you had been placing odds on which fro-yo joint would close first, that would be the deadpool. Get it right, please.

I think the point is that if a US or European chain is trying to expand in Canada, they may get a touch more exposure if they launched at Yonge and Dundas than up in the suburbs. Look at how quickly Chiptole became popular when they opened up downtown.
I'm sure these places also do great in Vaughan - there's nothing else there to compete with.

ce fiore is franchised. the "mega chain" had nothing to do with this one's location. but even if it had, that wasn't the problem; like LJ said, bandito's is doing fine there.
