House of Vintage Closes on Queen, Tentatively Enters Deadpool

Posted by Tim / June 5, 2008

House of VintageIt has only been four years but already the House of Vintage is calling it quits at 571 Queen Street West. The deceptively large and award winning vintage store is now shuttered - and added to the growing list of local businesses opting out of escalating rents on this stretch of Queen West.

In a note posted to the front window, the owner explains that they are not closing for long, but simply chose not to renew their lease. Watch for a new location to surface in about eight months.

High rents and low traffic... those big box stores like H&M and the GAP ruined the neighborhood, because why would you travel all the way downtown for shit you can find at your local crap-mall? Shopping traffic has actually dropped in that area. I wonder when the city is actually going to do something about protecting what actually makes Toronto unique.

Hmm...so the H&M's and condos move into their area, they move further west into parkdale, and what happens to the businesses they displace there?

re: guyThey simply move in to an empty building (or hopefully displace a shady "payday loan" place) near Roncesvales and you can pick up a pair of Chelsea boots you can later kick up on the teak coffee table you picked up at Queen Antiques.

Add them to the list: Rotate This, Studio Brilliante (spelling?), and several others have all started to make the move west in anticipation of the box store explosion.

yeah i work(ed) at a store on queen at spadina... a little independent store thats been around for YEARS.... as in 50 years.... and the rent went up by several THOUSANDS of dollars a month and there's no way a small independent store can survive

Now that Urban Outfitters is open west of Spadina, the landlords are asking much higher rents.

Hi. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, we're starting to look like a American style Mall on Queen St. More is NOT alwys better. All the big stores opening up are NOT Canadian based at all, and everything is made in China. I guess this is what we really want isn't it??? Dennis

Writing from the lower-48 here...
I don't know which is worst -- the enforced exports of our teevee and movies; the conglomeratization and commodifcation of retail stores and "restaurants;" 8 years of W; or the financial devastation he and the other Publicans and "free-market" fetishists wrought. Oh yeah, and the wars, too. And the kidnapping and torturing. And Sarah Palin. Well, everything, really.
Whichever, or all of the above, we all apologize deeply, profusely, and sincerely. Really -- we are very, very sorry.
(Notice we're not seeking forgiveness -- we know it's unforgivable, so we won't further insult your intelligence by asking.)
