Rob Ford's return fails to boost poll numbers

Posted by Derek Flack / July 4, 2014

Rob Ford pollsRob Ford's return from rehab has failed to boost his polling numbers, according to a new survey by Forum Research. The mayor's approval rating hovers at 31 per cent, which is up ever so slightly from its all time low of 28 per cent on June 6th. It's mostly the same story in the mayoral race, where projected vote breakdown looks very similar to Forum's last poll on June 23rd. Oliva Chow enjoys 36 per cent of the vote, John Tory comes in at 27 per cent and Ford sits at 26 per cent.

Ford's 26 per cent represents a bump from his mid-rehab 20 per cent on June 6th, but not over Forum's June 23rd poll, which put him at 27 per cent. While this may not be surprising to some, there was certainly much speculation that a slimmer and repentant Ford would be able to dramatically improve his numbers by merely returning and being apologetic. Toward this end, the mayor's return speech ranks as a failure. According to Forum, "more than 6-in-10 Toronto voters watched or listened to the speech the mayor gave upon his return on Monday, June 30 (61 per cent), but, of these, just one third say this speech was a satisfactory explanation and apology for the mayor's behaviour (34 per cent), while 6-in-10 did not find it satisfactory (60 per cent)."

If there was a winner of this particular poll, it's Tory, who continues to lead in the approval rating department and has made modest gains in the projected percentage of votes.

Racist slurs, homophobic remarks, derogatory claims, consistent drug use, drunken stupors, failing to abide by simple laws. Anybody else would've been fired from their job...

Polls aside, October can't come soon enough. 4 year terms for mayors has only been a norm since 2006. Maybe it's time to reduce that back to three or even two. These clowns at City Hall didn't quite accomplish in four years what could have been fit into one year of work.
Too bad Ford didn't stay in rehab until September. It would have been a great summer without the broFords and their silly antics.

OK, it's official... Ford is irrelevant.

Granted we have a decidedly "B-list" group of mayoral candidates to choose from, but could the media and voters of Toronto now focus more scrutiny on these candidates in at least an attempt to avoid another mayoralty debacle. Let RoFo and his dim-witted bully of a brother fade away into an embarrassing footnote in Toronto political history.

If he's irrelevant then leave him alone already. Quit jumping up and down with your shirt off trying to get the Ford bear to take a swipe.

Let it GO. Let it GO.

Drunk Godzilla is a famewhore who refuses to step away from the spotlight. As long as this hateful man is mayor of Toronto, he is newsworthy.

I bet that group of people who thought his apology was satisfactory didn't think he even needed to apologize in the first place.

Ahh that's what I've been asking in wishing for the whole election. Careful scrutinizing the other candidates most don't seem up for that. One bit of scrutiny and you'll get labelled a Ford Nation deflector.

Robbies return was never meant to boost the numbers, a return wouldn't automatically do that. He does have his work cut out for him and is still holding second place.

The Race is still early, one more candidate could jump late in the game and split the votes again.

It boggles my mind that this guy still has any supporters.
Granted most of his supporters probably have little education because anyone with any sort of smarts would know that this guy is mentally disabled.
This is what is wrong with our city. These dim-minded suburbans are really clueless, however, they do come out in droves when it comes to voting.
This only means that every single non-blob ford supporter HAS to come out on election day.
There is no way this blob can win another term as Mayor of our city.

I find it hard to believe he has any support at all anymore. Who are the people that are supporting him? I've not met one person who admits to supporting Rob Ford since he's been in office. Scary to think there are people dumb enough out there to get behind him. Kind of kills my faith in humanity.

The collective swing away from the right to the centre is well under way. Hudak couldn't stop it, and neither will Ford or Harper. The pendulum is even bigger than our porky mayor (believe it or not), and sweeps away whomever tries to stand in its way. Robbie, get ready to pack your hockey bag and vacate the office, because you have had your fifteen minutes of fame and we are over you.

The same was said about Kathleen Wynne and look at the votes she got even though many outlets have stated to keep her budget she'll have to cut more jobs than Hudak, give it 2 years and the cuts will start. Hudak put a number to the cuts she didn't so like most of her promises it will be hugely inflated in the end.

I wouldn't say people are generally uneducated, I think that voters in Ontario and Toronto care but don't spend the time to dig past the first layer of all the promises, scandals and political BS. They're all playing a game and we all know it.

As long as he is newsworthy a certain percentage of people that don't have a clue who to vote for will vote for Ford because he appears the most newsworthy and recognizable. Keep it up gang! He's a right off but the mayor you love to hate.

I wish I was reading headlines about Olivia or Tory today. Even this article could have been presented as "Olivia leads the race", instead the article title and imagery focus on Ford.

WHY!!!!!!!! We could be looking at a nice shot of Olivia or John not this clown.

I hate to admit I have a friend who is a Ford supporter (fortunately lives just outside the city so only moral support) and every time a new revelation about the lows Ford sinks to or another statement is proven as lie I question if he is still a supporter. As he remains a supporter I then ask the inevitable "how can you?" or "why?" to which he responds "Don't talk religion, politics or money." Followed by a "la la la I am not listening".

This is why Ford still has supporters.

I wouldn't say that it's only Ontario and Toronto that don't "dig past the first layer of BS", Albertans reelect the PCs every year even after they pillaged their heritage fund and their leader was caught out misspending large sums of money.

RE: comment about Wynne's cuts vs Hudak. The problem with Hudak is that he made it seem as if he delighted in slashing and burning (his "pink slip pledge" where he wanted to name 200 people he would fire). I know people who work in the PC party and the ideas for this kind of junk were done by the ideological fanatics who surround the leaders. By the looks of Ford's entourage above and the way they appear to fawn on him, he's got the same kind of people around him (the same can be said for many parties).

Olivia Chow's return from Niagara falls to boost poll numbers.

John Tory's return from Sudbury fails to boost poll numbers.

David Soknacki's return from Prince Edward County fails to boost poll numbers.
