W Hotel rumoured to be coming to Toronto

Posted by Derek Flack / April 30, 2014

W Hotel TorontoThe W Hotel brand might be on the way to Toronto. Long the source of speculation amongst the city's urban development nerds, the rumour mill has cranked up after Curbed got their hands on images that appear to indicate that Freed Developments has plans to bring the hotel to the Entertainment District. We previously heard that an existing Yorkville hotel was possible site for a Toronto W, though we haven't been able to confirm the location with any certainty.

Three years ago, there was also lots of talk about the hotel coming to Toronto. Back then the location was thought to be Temperance and Sheppard streets as part of a 54-storey development designed by Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects, but the project ultimately never came to be. That could, of course, also be the case this time, but you can bet the chatter is going to increase with the apparent affiliation with Freed.

About fucking time Starwood got its act together, and possibly the only city where the W showed up long after all of reborn boutique hotels it inspired were already there. I mean, seriously, what city does NOT have a W at this point, Hoboken? Oh wait, they got theirs in 2009. But a good sign nonetheless.

Note that W's often include a condo component separate from the hotel but with access to the hotel services, and I would certainly bet on the same in the Toronto market.

Now, if we can just get a bunch of Alofts (the limited-service sisters to the W) to spruce up the inner suburb and airport-strip things will really be looking up.

Because I live in Toronto, this news does not affect me.
I'm just gonna go ahead and eat this apple now.

Next time, maybe you want to credit Curbed Toronto for a change?

You guys are masters of ripping off articles/info from Curbed and UrbanToronto.

Um, Jake, BlogTO is aggregating news to provide information for its audience in much the same way that every other major news source in the world currently does.

Did you read the second sentence above that states "... after Curbed got their hands on ..." with a link to the Curbed article?

Holy crap, if you're going to whine, at least pay attention.

I worked at the W Hoboken and let me tell you, it was the number one property in the chain as far as guest satisfaction, etc. Guests loved getting out of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan after a long day, but still being able to see the beautiful midtown skyline out their window.

It always struck me odd that Toronto didn't have a location. Here's hoping. W still has a great environment and service, even though they are far from the only player in this game anymore.

Fingers crossed for TO!
