OPP to oversee investigation into Rob Ford

Posted by Staff / March 5, 2014

opp rob fordThe OPP is taking over the year-long investigation into Mayor Rob Ford currently known as Project Brazen 2. The request was reportedly made by Chief Blair himself who is looking to separate himself from the ongoing distractions known as the Ford brothers who continue to call for his resignation and have suggested the investigation itself is politically motivated.

As of today, Chief Blair is no longer overseeing Project Brazen 2 and the responsibility now lies with OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. The lead detective and investigators involved in Project Brazen will remain intact.

Sadly, still no word when we can expect a release of the crack video.

Yeah Blair gets to walk away from his over spending on this investigation!!

Why face the music when you can pull a McGuinty and do whatever it takes to avoid the outcome.

Funny how now Blair needs to go for higher better assistance on this case. I thought he had it under control the whole time? Should've been the OPP the entire time, this ass knows that he's about to get grilled.

The TPS' Giroux and his team are still the investigators, now reporting to the OPP. This is in response to the Fords going on about the Chief's "bias" and making challenges etc.

Blair knows he is in the wrong. Otherwise why would a cop hand over the investigation because the alleged criminal is whining and making allegations about the case and the chief. Your the Chief are you not supposed to stand tall instead of folding on pressure from your criminal.

Nah, nah nah...

Chief has been right every single time during this investigation, there's no reason he won't be right about this move too. Wise tactic, distances himself from the manure getting on his boots that the Fords will no doubt resort to.

The sooner Chief Blair buries both Fords into a provincial prison, the better. And if Blob and Thug Fudd were sweating bullets before, they are going to be sweating bombs now. :)

How much do they need to arrest Ford? I know they want to build a rock solid case on whatever they've got him on but seriously? This is taking too long, arrest him before he does any more damage.

When insinuations and media leaks continue into October will you people finally admit there is a concentrated campaign by the chief of police against the mayor? If they have any prosecutable crimes they can nail the mayor on where are the arrest warrants? Instead they'll keep this campaign going through the mayor's race to hinder Ford's re-election. Blair is doing Tory's and Chow's work for them.

How can you possibly interpret this as a positive thing for the brothers Ford? Do you feel that their po–lice investigation is going so well that it was required to bring in a higher level of investigators with more reach, more money and more resources? This is the end game.

Actually, this is a win for the Fords precisely because they are so detached from reality. Remember, their base is very low-information voters (and none too bright ones at that). Their standard spiel when confronted with something that is obviously not true is to start screaming the opposite, and given their dedication to lying after a long enough period their base will come to believe it as true. "Saved a billion dollars", "Streetcars in the middle of the street", "Jimmy Kimmel was great", etc. etc.

So this hands to them on a silver platter the chance to screech on their one-way youtube channel and running-from-the-media soundbites that Blair HAD to "resign" because they were right and it was all political and overspending. (As if investigating ad admitted crack-smoking, criminal-consorting official could ever be overspending, or as if someone planted the evidence).

As seen by the one or two multiple-name trolls on this page already, this will in fact be the talking point. It will be frustrating to Normal People, but unless we come up with a way to reach the Stupids this is precisely what they will believe.

It's really kind of unfortunate. As much as Blair was trying to stop fueling the Ford accusations, he just gave them a year's worth of gas.

This just in! The Mayor has been tracked with video surveillance from Toronto to Vancouver to Austin and Los Angeles. This is the big one we've got Rob Ford on 64 counts of Jay Walking. I will not comment on the contents of the video's but will say that I'm disappointed.

As much as Ford is a douche, TPS really screwed up this investigation. They had volumes of surveillance and data on this guy and did nothing. Blair is a horrible cop is much as Ford is a horrible Mayor. People soon forget the G20 debacle and he was the ring leader in that. When the OPP have to take over an investigation in your own city thats gotta be fucking embarrassing for TPS and Blair.

Uh...guys...you do realize that if Chief Blair was actually doing anything wrong, the LAST thing he would want is any involvement from a higher police body like the OPP, right? That would be like calling the cops on yourself. "Hey guys, check out all the bad stuff I'm doing!"

It's kind of terrifying how Ford Nation has this much difficulty comprehending such a simple, short news article. Eek.

If the police were actually interested in making a cheap political hack on Rob Ford, they could have just pulled him over any of the times he was driving drunk.

I think Blair is separating himself from this case because of the money spent in surveillance , as well as his own breach of information early in the investigation. It does look politically motivated, and you can bet the high priced Ford lawyers are salivating at the counter suit that may come of this thanks to the Police Chief. Blair is doing what all politicians do when they screw up, hand off the case to someone else to attempt to clean up this whole mess.

By the OPP taking over, you can pretty much bet that this investigation is over and probably already in a cardboard box collecting dust in some storage room in Toronto Police headquarters.

Think about it, after all this surveillance, fottage and audio tape taken from the past year and a half, havnet Toronto police come up with anything???? This case goes to the OPP and I can bet that the this case will just dissolve - better it coming from the OPP than Chief Blair.

Its not like calling the police on yourself because they are taking over the investigation of Ford not Blair. The OPP wants the facts, to carry on the investigation they don't care how much was spent or how Blair created his task force.

Many of you are missing what actually is happening here. TPS is still doing the investigation w/Giroux as lead. Instead of reporting to his supervisors at TPS, he will report to the OPP. This simply removes the uppity ups at TPS and the Chief from the equation should this all go before a court.

We have no idea how much was spent on the investigation, nor do we know the entirety of what they have.

He's likely stepping away because one of the subjects being investigated is publicly slandering him and claiming political motivations behind the investigation.

Any intelligent individual would back away in order to secure the chance of convictions and avoid people getting off on technicalities.

You guys need not get your hopes too high about this. When you think about the OPP and the TPS working together, just remind yourself of the Elliot Lake incident. This is not good news. A new set of eyes maybe (like a new court, new prosecutor, and a new judge?), or just keeping the story alive because Rob Fords' approval rating just went up again. Unfortunately the evidence is exactly the same and the outcome will be no different. The only prosecutable evidence I see on those tapes are evidence of Extortion against the gang members (if Rob Ford gives evidence), and Willful Misconduct of Duty against the Toronto Police (because they failed to protect the Mayor). There's also entrapment here, because had the police arrested the true extortionists in the first place, Lisi wouldn't be charged with extortion himself, because it would never have gotten that far. Yes the police screwed up some parts of this case, but who gave them the false lead against the mayor in the first place? Bet you it was those turds at City Hall or one of the Board members...ohhhh...what if it's the board member the Chief went fishing with? (cue music - duh♪, duh♪, Dughhhhh♪).

I love what they didn't screw up, Lots of nasty criminals off of the street, thankfully. Have you noticed it's quieter in the city now? The credit goes to Chief Blair who finally got the lead out.

Dean - LMAO!

mike in parkdale - That's true, but you know why they didn't? The Mayor would've known he was being targetted by police. The police couldn't have that though. They needed time to give Rob an opportunity to hang himself, which he didn't. Now who has egg on their faces? The police who investigated him, that's who.

About time. A lot of effort has gone into this without much to show for it.

Cops running year long operations on politicians (or anyone) is a slippery slope. Put up or shut up (and shut it down) - With Ford admiting drug use it has to be something more - more than getting drunk, and being mean to his employees and urinating in a park.

I think I have lost perspective because of decades in the justice system, but do you Ford people really represent the public's understanding of how the police/court system works? The OPP are serving a PR/shield function for Blair in preparation for the laying of charges/trial/appeal. The Crown riding herd on Giroux is giving instructions. As I said under the last Ford blogto heading, charges are imminent, there are multiple charges, the most serious being counselling murder. Ford could get life. The courts don't look kindly upon the abuse of public office.

Obviously this isn't an investigation of Blair, but he'll be passing over all the work his team has done to a police body that outranks him which would be an incredibly risky move if he'd broken any rules or obtained evidence improperly whatsoever, as other commenters are implying.

Admittedly I'm no criminal law expert but I'd imagine if you'd done a shoddy job on a project, the last thing you'd want to do is show your work to more superiors who could point out its flaws and potentially axe the whole thing altogether.
