Kevin Spacey takes a few jabs at Rob Ford on Kimmel

Posted by Derek Flack / March 3, 2014

Rob Ford Jimmy KimmelIf there was any doubt about how Rob Ford was going to be handled when he appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live, last night's brief pre-appearance should clear things up. Addressing the audience, Kimmel confirms that the Toronto mayor will be a guest tonight before Ford comes out on stage, seemingly confused about the timing of his appearance. It's an awkward enough moment, even if it's clearly staged. It's also a sort of promise that tonight's interview is sure to be filled with hijinks and embarrassing moments for Ford.

Arguably, the real fun last night took place during Kevin Spacey's interview with Kimmel, when the House of Cards star takes a few pokes at Ford much to the delight of the host and audience. Kimmel thanks Spacey for sharing a dressing room with the mayor, to which he responds "he threw up all over it." These are just appetizers for tonight's appearance, but it'd be fair to say we're getting hungry.

Oh man, he says he's going to promote Toronto? The guy voted against funding for TIFF and threw a fit over flying the rainbow flag, and so he goes to Hollywood? I hope this isn't as cringeworthy as I expect it to be.

If it goes that far, Ferd may lose the 5% of normal people he needs to win a 3 or 4 way vote split race. Here's hoping he farts loudly on air or pisses on camera, etc.

Yes he's went to promote Toronto aka Hollywood North. Just because he voted against the funding TIFF gets doesn't mean he's against the film industry or having films made here in Toronto.

Rainbow Flag is a non issue in this case/visit, it should've been the Ukranian flag that was raised at city hall during the Olympics if we wanted to stop the Putin regime. Now Putin is having his way with the Ukraine and its a hot topic but too late to get in front of it and Putin will push to spread his hate and anti-gay laws into other countries which none of us want.

ROB can you please bring back a Kimmel autograph for David Soknacki. It would be a nice gesture if Soknaki came out of this election with at least something to show the grandkids.

Um, Hollywood is a pretty gay-friendly place and the epi centre of big-budget entertainment. Ford consistently voted against funding for the arts (TIFF, Symphony, Pride) and he is in Hollywood to drum up business? Wrong guy. That, and the fact he's been the butt of a number of Kimmel bits and is basically only known outside of Canada for being "crack mayor".

Doubt flying the Ukrainian flag on a ceremonial staff at NPS would have stopped Putin's march into Crimea.

It's disgusting how this article is written. I watched the segment and it seemed hilarious and extremely staged, not at all the "embarrassing Rob Ford" style this article was themed as. America loves Rob Ford and the selfish media in Toronto is obviously butthurt and jealous. Get a grip.

we have city officials who work with agents in LA to promote TO. Of course Ford didn't consult/inform any of them:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/rob-fords-mission-to-tinseltown-left-torontos-film-ambassador-in-the-dark/article17190856/

oh, and Kimmel paid for part of the trip, which is against council protocol...

Looking good Rob! Tuxedo suits you, you look good in it. Most of us with we could go to the Oscars bit instead we sit non our couches watch it on TV and name call and critique those that attend and what they wear, who's best, who's worst... I'd go if I was invited to.

Kate don't get caught up in the red tape. That's what makes Rob great he's gonna do what's needed and what he feels is right. If he has to go around getting check marks and signatures from everyone he's never gonna get to go. Sure we have agents that help to promote Toronto in LA but that does not mean more can't be done by the Mayor.

How many great people in history have been told no you can't achieve what your after for this reason or that reason, so and so are already trying it, blah blah blah. Let the wings soar, if it crashes, so be it, try try again. If it flies we've witnessed the greatness the Wright brothers achieved for their generation.

Ummm notice that Kimmel is NOT calling him Toronto's Crack Smoking mayor, Rob has negotiated some specifics into his appearance. Majority of Hollywood would not know how he voted towards the arts, but would probably know who the recognizable figure is. Voting to shift the budget funding for the arts does not mean that you personally do not like or support the arts. Its running a city a budget, a business, sometimes cuts need to be made in order to thrive in another area.

I've never heard of a gay casting couch in Hollywood but I've heard numerous times the sexism that exists in Hollywood and the images it likes to portray.

If the Film Industry is so booming in Toronto as the Post article states then the city and taxpayers should not have to help fund the festival.

How do we get the dollars needed for the festival from the multi-million dollar productions that come to our city, block our roads, take up the parking spots along our roads and cause increased traffic congestion to an already congested city.

Yes Kate That was before, this is now. Things change.

Let's see how many times he refers to him as Rob Ford the Crack Smoking Mayor on the show last night and on tonight's show.
Last night = 0

He's going back in front of the same audience were the jokes were made. The best place and audience to redeem yourself.

There will always be jokes and snickering around FORD due to the past events. The question to ask is if a shift is happening, is it now still 100% jokes and ridicule, or is it 25% jokes and 75% honesty. Can't wait to see!

Since Ford has been mayor, tourism has gone up in the city. Bet it will be even higher this year.

Bet Ford will be surprised Los Angeles (population way bigger than Toronto) has only 15 councillors. Toronto ---> 44! Looks like there's still way too much gravy on the train in council at city hall. Rob Ford wants to cut that too and save YOU tons of money.

People this is the Crack Smoking Mayor, and he's still in office if that didn't remove him from office a visit to Kimmel won't do it either. So he didn't consult the chair of the Economic Development Committee, or the Film Commissioner, who cares, a minor slap on the wrist for the Crack Smoking Mayor. What are they gonna do suspend his pay for 90 days? boo hoo

Saw the first tidbit. Very funny, cute even. Seems LA loves Rob Ford too.

Have fun while in LA Rob. Don't mind the haters, they're just jealous because no one ever invites THEM onto their shows. The majority of Toronto is happy you're making terrific connections. This feels exciting. So please, keep up the good work. Would love to see Kimmel in the north.

Oh, and Kate? Drumming up business for T.O doesn't mean, necessarily, Arts 100% of the time, alhough for Hollywood to bring some of their shine north would be amazing. As far as the Toronto Arts, I wouldn't mind one bit seeing their funding cut. If they're so good at what they do, what do they need taxpayer dollars for? Would rather see the money go towards daycares.

Also drumming up business for Toronto doesn't always mean having meetings booked to come back with a deal. Its about PROMO, PR, the same way your government spends on generic TV ads to promote tourism in Ontario and Toronto, pretty bland pretty generic ads that have no significant call to action to get tourists to book an immediate trip. Cost of production of TV ad + cost of TV airtime = WOW pricey. A trip to LA is not that costly

Very disappointed in the teaser appearance, as clearly Kimmel is now going to play nice and suck up to Rob, ribbing him for gentle laughs and continued clownish appearances rather than doing a Jon Stewart skewering for the sake of making a conservative blowhard look like an idiot. Absolutely there is a document or email somewhere stating what questions Jimmy will not ask in exchange for the appearance.

I was hoping for insane levels of tension and awkwardness and hopefully a walkout -- Lohan or Madonna on Letterman -- but now I can see that isn't going to happen. Rob has perfected a strategy of only appearing in forums where he controls the conversation (YouTube, radio) or on US programs where they lack the appetite or knowledge to refuse his bull.

Late night wants drug jokes and other bits of fun. They'll have no interest in disproving lies about budgets or transportation planning or grilling him on his gay pride boycotts. It's very dispiriting.

As for the PR excuse, don't insult my intelligence. You don't show up in someone's town, talk to strangers and TV cameras and say "please outsource your business to my town" all while lacking the intelligence to discuss any of the details (I'm sure Rob knows all the payroll tax credits, right?) and call it "drumming up business". He went for Kimmel, and that's that.

Nearly every post on here has some sort of Pro-Ford slant. Who knew BlogTO is such a mortal threat to Team Ford that they've had to import a troll or two to massage the conversation on here.

Careful lads...the fellas you've employed are no Dave. In fact, they're kind of mental midgets, to be sure. You might just be slitting your own throats by solidifying the mushy middle (who aren't fan of sleazy tactics) away from your man, sending your boy packing come election day.

It's gonna happen anyway, but this may just hasten RoFo's plummet.

In his 3+ years in office I have not met one person...not a single one...that has admitted to voting for him. I work with the public and meet thousands of new people every year. I can't fathom how anyone could think this man is a good mayor or how you could defend anything he has done while in office. I love Toronto and this will be my home forever, but I am sad to be a Torontonian every time I see his face.

Do NOT make a comment for the "majority" of Torontonian's indicating that all are happy he is "making connections".

Rob Ford is a walking punchline, a petulant liar-bully, a MESSY alcoholic/addict in denial, and a "mayor" in title only...to name but a few of his many. shortcomings
If you think the "majority" of people who live in this city are are happy with ANY of that, then you must not live here...or, you meant the majority of sad individuals who make up the farce-force of Ford Nation...
