Toronto mayoral hopeful just wants to be heard

Posted by Aubrey Jax / February 27, 2014

David SoknackiWho is David Soknacki? A new candidate is throwing in his hat for Mayor of Toronto, and he's crafted a clever online campaign strategy (such as the image above). Soknacki is the former City Councillor for Scarborough East as well as the city's former Budget Chief - it sounds dry, but according to a post Soknacki made for the Huffington Post, that's the point. What good will it do Toronto if Jimmy Kimmel knows our Mayor's name? Probably... none?

In the Huffington Post piece Soknacki explains he's a lot like Ford: he's a business owner, in favour of tax cuts, dismayed by Scarborough's transit situation, and comes not from snooty downtown TO (right?) but from one of the city's oft-neglected regions (Scarborough, in Soknacki's case). That's where the commonality end though. Soknacki champions playing it cool at City Hall - "building creative solutions requires patience, good humour and a deep base of policy knowledge." Not exactly the warpath attitude that Ford is displaying in his own race to Ford More Years.

Soknacki is campaigning on his website (it's about as pro lastcallto's - this looks like an election that will be all about fancy web presence) and on on Twitter.

Out of the current bunch of candidates, I like this guy the most. He's got a head on his shoulders, and reads the facts.

Of course, he'll get crushed by Tory and Ford because one's a media darling and the other's notorious.

Terrible colour choice, Soknacki.
iSkyscraper / February 27, 2014 at 03:48 pm
Would make a great mayor, has decent policy points, but no chance. He should run for some other office, make a name for himself, and come back when Tory finishes up his second term and retires.
Hall Rat / February 27, 2014 at 04:21 pm
Author was Budget Chief under Miller in his Miller's first term. Councillor for a decade or so too.
Hall Rat replying to a comment from Hall Rat / February 27, 2014 at 04:22 pm
Oops, should read Soknacki not "author". Not sure where that came from
raccoonw/bread / February 27, 2014 at 04:29 pm
Sounds like a great candidate. Too bad he won't get elected. This city is not ready for an actual leader so long as people still support Cartoon Mayor McCheese. Socnacki should campain to be mayor of another city. After he's won, we can cry about our leadership and wish we had someone as responsible for mayor (just like we do with Naheed Nenshi).

We DO need someone colourful ... just not red and yellow. I second the hire a graphic designer thing.
RKMK / February 27, 2014 at 06:56 pm
"I'm not voting for this guy because of his colour choices" has to be among one of the flakiest voting rationales in history. Way to go, blogto commenters, look to yourselves when you try to figure out how Toronto got Rob Ford.

The design seems purposefully eye-catching to me, and his early entry (Soknacki has actually been in the race since day one, has had multiple speeches, etc) is designed to give him as much time as possible to build name recognition. He's by far the the acceptable candidate registered so far. I'm going to vote Olivia if she tosses her name in, but if we had ranked ballots, I'd put him at number 2.

RKMK, you can't honestly be so naive and clueless as to think that the colour criticism is anything more than a joke, can you? Oh - I see you're voting for Chow. Never mind. Naive and clueless it is.
RKMK / February 27, 2014 at 07:25 pm
Sorry, v79, when you described the red and yellow as "communist" I simply assumed you were an earnest crazypants wingnut, not someone with an absolutely banal sense of humour, sorry.

The subway to STC will serve as the borough's backbone, and must be built. Frankly, this line should have been extended years ago.
David WHATNOCKI / February 27, 2014 at 10:45 pm
He looks like David MAOnacki, amirite?
MER1978 replying to a comment from Materloo / February 27, 2014 at 11:14 pm
"The subway to STC will serve as the borough's backbone" ... with so little coverage more like it will serve as the borough's tail bone.

Everyone dismissing this guy will be eating their words. Both miller and ford were dark horses in their first race. I said it before and I'll say it again. This guy will come up the middle to become the mayor of this fine city for 2015z

Sadly Toronto and the suburbs are filled with dimwits, who will either vote for Ford or Tory. The REAL mayoral contenders would be Soknacki and Chow. They're both very smart, very good with numbers and both have a solid history of working in the community, helping the poor-people out (something they both do not gloat about) and they genuinely care about Toronto. Now we ALL know people in Toronto are generally mean spirited, classless and for the most part, elitist, self-entitled snobs. It is only fair that a dimwitted bunch should continue to suffer the wrath of rob and doug ford or john tory (which is French for rob ford, only thinner with more hair and less crass).
Jon / February 28, 2014 at 02:19 pm
Ohhh no. Make your campaign about yourself and your platform, any candidate that tries to spin Ford into their campaign is just wrong.

Tell me whats great about you and your platform NOT why your better than Ford. We all know Fords a jerk off any most feel anyone would be better than Ford, so the fact you have to tell us why your slightly better when Ford has brought the bar down so low anyway.
Dabney / February 28, 2014 at 02:28 pm
Sadly Toronto will vote for contenders names that are actually on the ballot. Unfortunately Toronto and downtown is filled with dimwits that's are ignoring thew real candidates and putting all their hopes on Chow who isn't even in the race at this point. Go fuck yourselves! Ford more years!!!!
JamesVR / February 28, 2014 at 02:42 pm
How did this guy get a japanese last name? Has anyone done a background check or see his birth certificate to validate that he can actually run? Obama had similar issues and I want to make sure we don't end up with a hopesy changey liar that accomplishes nothing like Obama.
Sean / February 28, 2014 at 03:33 pm
Is this guy a John Kerry knock off? What's with the McDonalds colors? Vote Sockacki and two can dine for $9.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tory / February 28, 2014 at 03:37 pm
And Scarbough is just flourishing under his leadership. People and businesses are moving to Scarborough by the masses! No wait that's Mississauga my mistake.
realityCheck / February 28, 2014 at 05:08 pm
The Star is giving this guy heavy duty promotion. But what sinks him for me is that he located his business in Markham, no doubt wanting to escape TO's higher corporate tax rate WHICH OF COURSE he had no role in shaping while serving as former Mayor David Miller's budget chief. He sounds reasonable but his behaviour suggests a defiency in basic integrity.
Dimwit1 replying to a comment from realityCheck / February 28, 2014 at 07:23 pm
Since when did basic integrity make the list of "Necessary competencies" for the Mayor job posting. More like a "Nice to have but Not really" Mr Snickerdoodle will doodle just fine.
i hate myself for eating KFC / February 28, 2014 at 08:25 pm
I ate KFC it's gross and good like ford...and sognali!!
Tara / February 28, 2014 at 08:42 pm
Everyone supporting this guy will be eating their words in a few months. Of course he'll get crushed because he's not the best candidate, you can blame it on whatever you want fact is a he wasn't/isn't the best candidate.
Dean / February 28, 2014 at 09:13 pm
How can this guy represent Scarborough when he can't even speak patois?
Clarence Boddicker / February 28, 2014 at 11:46 pm
what a loser
Dave / March 1, 2014 at 09:26 am
The only ting he had to say is how he's not Rob Ford?

Adam / March 1, 2014 at 09:32 am
So we all know that it doesn't matter if Jimmy Kimmel knows our mayor or not, even Rob knows that, its its never been the objective of any mayor to get Kimmel to know them. So what? I don't get what he's saying - clearly a bad communicator, he has this ad , this chance to speak to the voters and that's the message he's sending us?

Clearly that's why Blogto created this article cause we all can't believe this garbage!
kn / March 2, 2014 at 02:40 pm
Anybody but Adam Vaughan or Olivia Chow.......please????!
Bruno / March 26, 2014 at 07:51 pm

@Jimmykimmel just tweeted after tonights mayoral debate
