The photos of the week: September 1-7

Posted by Derek Flack / September 7, 2012

Ferris Wheel TorontoThe photos of the week collect each of the editor-selected photos of the day into one post for a contest to be decided by our readers. Sponsored by Posterjack, the photographer whose image receives the most votes will be awarded with a voucher code for a 24"x36" poster print of their work.

All the rules and fine-print can be found in the original announcement post on the blogTO Flickr page. One thing to add, however, is that the voting period ends at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, after which the winner will be contacted with the good news.

For those photographers whose images are featured below, please feel free to give us a little information about your shot — i.e. where and when it was taken — in the comments section. Who knows? Maybe your description will sway voters in your favour!

I was a bit restless Friday night and since I'm a nerd I decided to go out in search of a photography "sweet spot" to shoot some long exposures. A while back, I stumbled upon this location where I had a postcard worthy view of the cityline but I could never navigate back to it. I tried about 5 times and each time found a place that was decent but not perfect. I rode off on my motorcycle at midnight without any idea of where I was going. After nearly randomly navigating to a spot by the lake, I found myself at the perfect spot that I had been searching for. What's more is that the lake was the calmest I've ever seen it. Barely any ripples or movement - this giant lake behaved like a pond! It was so quite and serene. I set up for several time lapse long exposures and let the camera do its thing. Unfortunately, I had attracted a family of raccoons and after trying to scare them off with my iPhone flash and failing, I had to pack up and find another spot. I spent another hour or so at the new location and decided to head home. The night completely cleared my restlessness. Long exposure night photography along with riding my bike at night is my form of therapy. This was taken Friday night with a Nikon D5100 with the following settings: 50mm, f/10, ISO 100 and 43.0 seconds. Thanks all for your support!

I hadn't noticed how calm the water was first glance, good shot. An excellent story to go along with it too. Thanks.

Hello there. Well, about my photo... My out-of-body and lens experience led me into the thin dimensions of the marvelous sunset on dreamscapes of our beautiful Toronto! During long 20 sec I had my astro-journey to the dream city existing somewhere between earth and sky... ...all brought to you by my manual zoom / long exposure magic :-)

In other words, my photo is from my experimental series called "Astro Projection" where I use intentional camera movements (ICM) and manual zooming during long exposure on dreamscapes of our beautiful Toronto.
It's a straight out of camera image - no processing involved. Cheers!
